  • Headlight blow outs

    Hi Guys

having a issue that is frustrating me to no end. I keep getting blown headlights (low beam only) and I need some advice as to why it could be.

I do have the narva blue type globes.

any advise as the globes are not cheap and I am sick of replacing them?

Check your charge voltage, also the high power bulbs don't last as long
    as the standard bulbs.

Found this comment on another site:

"They both blew after less than 6 months and I even installed an original Narva relay. After complaining to Narva about their short life span they sent me 2 more and admitted that the life span is just 200 Hours."

    Cheers

      Hello Blackvx,

High output QH lamps will have a much short lifespan than standard output QH lamps if they are operated above their rated voltage and on rough roads. The high output halogen process runs the filaments hotter than QH standard lamps ( which also run hotter than standard incandescent lamps ) and the low beam filament is shrouded by the guard which controls the low beam cutoff pattern. The shroud is always colder than the filament and the tungsten which evaporates off the filament while it is turned on will deposit onto the cold shroud quite quickly. If you examine the blown lamp you will see globules of filament all over the shroud.

Using a relay is a good way of ensuring that the lamp gets the maximum voltage available and puts out the maximum light but it also tends to reduce the life of the filament. The low beam dies first because it is used more often than the high beams.

Try a HID conversion kit. These will put out 4 times as much light as a high output halogen lamp of comparable rating if you need more light. Use 4300 degree colour temperature if you dont like the bright blue appearance and glare of usual HID systems, they are available in H4 pattern lamps and really do work.

      regards

      Ross

While I am interested in HID I wont be putting them into my car whilst they are illegal, no self cleaning et etc.

wow only 200 hours??? well that would be why then, I leave my headlights on constantly day or night. Might have to look at going back to the standard globes, they are just so horribly dull.

Might be worth talking to ARB about their fat boy globes, they might last longer.

Give the philips ones a trial run.
Found them to be better than the narva's in multiple trials on different vehicles.Currently have them in both work hilux and prado and the prado ones have been in for 2/1/2 years with headlamps always on.http://www.lighting.philips.com.au/v...=car_&vp=white light_car&va=white light_car#0

I have been having the same problem. I'd be happy if they lasted 6months. I've tried a couple of types of bulbs and looked everywhere for a bad connection or something that would be causing it.

Do Narva put on the packet that they will only last 200hrs. Will need to order some phillips based on the advice here.
