  • Do you have to re-tune engine after fitting performance exhaust.

Hi i have been doing lots of research on here about upgrading the exhaust on my 2003 diesel grande im thinking of going either the beaudesert or the taipan system my prado already had a chip fitted and tune on the dyno before i brought it what iam wondering is when i fit a exhaust to it do you have to get the engine re tuned because the engine egt will be lower due to larger exhaust i havent been able to find any info on this hope some people can shed some light on the subject cheers in advance. My thoughts are that the lower the egt the better???

Hi, I've just had a 3" system fitted to mine, about six weeks earlier I had a module and a boost controller fitted. It's been a really interesting exercise. I researched a lot before settling on a particular brand module and decided to have a boost controller fitted at the same time on the recommendation of my source. After the boost controller and module were fitted the car definitely ran a bit smoother and seemed to have a bit more torque, then about a week ago I noticed a vacuum type sound which turned out to be a hose had come off the boost controller due to my source fitting standard hoses rather than heat resistant hoses, problem fixed. At the same time as I had the 3" system fitted I also had an EGT gauge fitted - I went 3" on the recommendation of my exhaust fitter who claimed that on his 95 series Prado he found that a 3" system and standard dump pipe was optimum. I had wanted to go 2.75 system with matching dump pipe but thought this guy seems to know his stuff so I'll go with his recommendation. Since the system went on I've found that the bumper of my Prado is getting coated with fumes, I think the system has been cut a bit short as it ends under the bodywork rather than protruding past it like a standard system, I'm trying to negotiate with my fitter to get this addressed - at the moment he is telling me that the exhaust "grows" about 30mm when hot (ha-ha-ha). I've also had some issues with the boost controller in that it was causing an engine "malfunction light" to come on under acceleration, with the boost controller back at "0" rather than at "1" the light doesn't come on but my source has now advised that a batch of boost controllers had been supplied with incorrect diameter bores so he is now going to swap me out for a correct size - I'll let you know the outcome. With the boost controller on setting "0" I have about a 1.5psi increase in boost over standard, with it on setting "1" it obviously increases more than that and spikes at over 15psi which generates the MAL. I intend to fit the 2.75 dump pipe when the boost controller is swapped over so again; I'll keep you posted. Update: 9/02/2012 - Couldn't be bothered wasting my time going back to someone who tells me my system grows when hot so I popped into my local Town & Country Exhaust guy who obligingly shaped and fitted a stainless steel tip that extends the exhaust to where it should exit. (Now I'm happy - happiness for $20 is good value.)

Exhaust systems do "grow" when they get hot, pretty basic if you really think about it!
