  • What size thread are the holes in the block above the aircond compressor?

    Hi
I am going to put the earth of my Aux battery to the engine block just above the aircon compressor. The threaded holes are approx 10mm in diameter and a 10mm bolt goes in about 1 turn by hand then jams.
Can anyone advise the thread and type of bolt to use? I was planning on using a short Stainless steel bolt unless there is a better recommendation.
    Thanks
    Best Regards
    Charlie

Not sure about the thread size, but I would suggest against earthing your Aux battery to the engine block. The appropriate place to earth the battery would be the chassis/body.

If you earth it to the block you'll need to run another earth from the block to the chassis anyway so why double up.

The alternator which generates all power in a car is mounted to the engine block, so this is the original earth point and the best place to earth the auxiliary battery. The rest of the car is earthed to the block by various earthing straps etc.

I earthed my auxiliary battery to the block. As for the bolt it sounds like an m10, don't force it, the right bolt will screw in by hand unless the thread is dirty.

There is a photo of where I attached the earth cable to the block half way down the page of this thread http://www.pradopoint.com/forumdisplay.php?70-150-Series-Discussion-(the-2010-Prado)

Just went out to check and measure the bolt size seems to be M10 x 1.25

If your putting in a second battery, just connect the negative between the two batteries. This is by far the easiest and most highly recommended option.

This will also potentially give you the greatest voltage loss when charging, it's not the best option.

krypto, can you explain the technical reason behind this. This is the first I've ever heard of anyone saying this.

The return -ive cable will provide the least resistance versus the chassis.

In the days of installing big stereos we would always run both +ive & -ive from aux battery banks as we tested voltage drop through earthing to the chassis.

Thanks for your replies. I got Mr Toyota to provide me with a bolt when I had the towbar fitted. It is a finer pitch than a normal metric thread. In fact it is the same pitch as a normal 8mm bolt (is that 1.25?).
I chased down krypto's post of the engine block earth point. I used the same location on my 120 but now I notice this is the engine head not block. I think I will use that point in any case. The pic is 1/2 way down the URL

                  http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...Battery-Guide&

If you remove the 3rd row seats you will win some bolts the correct size.

Hi Fellas. You can never have too many earths on a vehicle - both to the chassis and the engine. Cheers, Derb.

If the alternator earth to the block then the shortest earth for the aux battery is to the block. It is a longer path if the negative of the aux has to run to the main battery and then back to the alternator - 1-1/2 lengths of the engine bay as opposed to 1/2 a length. So best is the block, better is to earth to both block and chassis in the same manner as the main.

The battery is charged by the alternator and the alternator is the original source of all power in a car.

Any length of cable will cause a voltage loss and this especially a problem for 12v systems. A big cable will reduce the loss but there will still be a loss particularly at high current charging rates. This applies to both the positive and negative sides of circuit. So the less cable between the alternator and a battery, the less voltage loss.
