  • Handling After 40mm Lift??

    Hi all,

New to the Lifting & 4wd scene.

So my Question is what is the handling on the road like after a 40mm lift & say 31's have been installed???

Asking this due to when I drop my Prado of @ the mechacnics, I told him not to bother about the front shocks cause I'm getting a lift done soon, he replyed with "oh have been in one thats been lifted? It will be all over the road & feel like its about to roll over"..... So his he correct or has he been in one thats had like a 3"+ lift & 33+ tyres??

Any help on this would be great

    Cheers Smonkey

Crap, I'd be changing machanic he's full of shit and doesnt know what he's on about. I had bigger tyres, and 2 inch lift on both my previous 90's. Was OME (ARB) lift, bullbar on both, etc and the ride difference was fantastic, the factory suspension wallows all over the road especially after going over a speed bump, the rolling feeling when cornering is reduced big time, and you dont get that floating feeling when going over roads that have those rises in them. Totally different vehicle to drive in a good way. If your still not sure must be some one you know with a lift down your way, ask them to go for a run in it, HUGE difference. I have 120 now and while it rides firmer then both my 90's did with factory suspension I have been in a couple of 120's with a lift and again the ride is a big difference, again in a positive way. All I can say is if you are not putting a steel bullbar with winch etc then dont go heavy duty, it will ride to hard but still handle a heap better then standard......Cheers Steve

Can only reiterate what Steve has said. After a lift (50mm) on both the 90 and 120 the ride and handling was superior to standard. Not long after we bought the 120 we followed a friend in their standard 120 up a mountain range and all my wife could say was 'license to wallow'. Maybe your mechanic is thinking of a Patrol or Cruiser with 100mm lift and muddies. Otherwise he is full of it.

I would say he was in one that did not have proper tuned suspension, that being the shocks and springs are the same manufacturer. The manufacturers spend alot of time and money tuning the shocks and springs to get a complient ride, Those manufacturers are EFS & Old Man Emu. The other brands are a mix and match, which is a compromise. One brand that you need to steer clear of is Tuff Dog, their gear is cheap rubbish that will fail in the most inapropriate time.
I have EFS 2" lift on my Prado and have nothing but praise for the ride and handling, so much better than standard.
One thing to keep in mind is, all 2" lifts will only be 38mm, anything more than that is wrong, and should be avoided.

            Hey Smonkey,

A 2" lift is great on road! Ditch the mechanic!

However, after adding the 32" MTZ's there was definitely more body roll on corners, so I just slowed down a bit. Handling otherwise was great.

Now with the extra 1.5" body lift and 33's there's more body roll, so I definitely need to go easy on corners, but it still drives straight and responds great. Even if I push it on a corner it just tends to skid, not roll.

What pressures are you using in the tyres, as you may find that the roll is actually in the tyre, not the suspension. You may have to go up 5 to 10 psi

37-38 on road if not loaded up, higher when loaded.

I figure it's the suspension because they're only mediums, and I think OME's tend to be a bit soft.

Try going up to 42 psi unloaded, I believe it is the sidewall movement/flex that is making it feel like your getting more lean into corners, as you said earlier, going from 32's up to 33's made it feel like you had more body lean.

My 2 inch lift with kings springs performs way better than the std suspension that was fitted. I run 32's and I don't get hardly any body roll. I'd say your mechanic has never owned a 4wd and has probably only ridden in a 4 inch lifted Patrol or Landcruiser with old suspension once previously that handled like a boat. A new 2 inch lift has every advantage over the standard suspension unless you're aged and have trouble climbing into a car that bit higher.

Hi Fellas. My experience has been same as most - no prob's after fitting new 2" lift springs. Wouldn't want to go much higher though - too hard on CV's. Cheers.

Thanks for asking this question. I am looking at lifting my 120 series and after reading the replies to your post I can't wait to drive it after its been done. The only problem is what to fit. OME, EFS, Bilstiens.......and on it goes. I am currently tending to OME but thats today, tomorrow I'll read or watch something and change my mind again.

                            Cheers
