  • In dash fuel filter light and buzzer coming on when going over big bumps

    Hey All,

Got my BFG A/T's fitted about a month ago and took the prado on its first "real" 4wd trip a week ago. Loved it!! The car is amazing. Tyres are amazing too. Went on a pretty gnarly trip along the Deddick track in Victoria (snowy river country). It was an epic journey, and we probably should have taken note of the "dry weather only" sign as it was pretty tough going on one hill climb (took 3 go's but I got up!).

Anyway, filled up @ BP near Pakenham on the freeway on the way down to the trip. Never filled up there before.

I found when we went over some BIG bumps or around corners fast a buzzer and light came on in the dash. First few times i couldn't see what it was, but it's near the fuel gauge. Second time i saw it and it's a picture of a fuel bowser with some dotted lines under it. I assume the fuel filter? I looked it up on the book and it says to take it to the dealer.

    Is it dodgy fuel??

Anyway, the buzzer and warning light only come on very briefly when going over a bump. Is this a problem?? Could there be some water in the filter which gets splashed onto a sensor when going over a bump?

It happened again today when I drove into the driveway at work at speed. Just as I went over the bump it buzzed for about 1/2 a second then went away.

Any thoughts?? Haven't had a diesel before this so it's all new to me. How do I drain the filter? Should I take it to the dealer?

If anyone can shed some light it would be great!

    Cheers

    Phil

Definitely check it out. Look on the drivers side door trim, I believe there may be instructions to pump the water/fuel out there if that light comes on. If not, check the manual as I am sure it is in there on how to pump it out. Also check if there are any electrical connections attaching to the pump housing (located on passenger side, close to firewall), and reseat and clean connections if need be.

Once done, monitor, and report back the findings

I would be doing in sooner, rather than later BTW.

just open the drain tap on the bottom of fuel filter and drain a small amount out.
prime fuel filter to ensure you still have some fuel in filter and your done

I have an 07 Diesel 120 series and had a similar problem over the last few days with the fuel filter warning light staying on. Took it to a mate who is a mechanic, drained the accumulated water from the fuel filter but warning light stayed on. Eventually I worked out how to reset the fuel filter warning light by doing the following:

        1. Disconnect top wires/plug on filter housing
        2. Turn Ignition on
        3. Plug top wires/plug back in
        4. Turn Ignition off
        5. Turn Ignition back on and start vehicle

I know it is not the exact same problem but thought it may help someone else down the track.

Thanks all. I drained it yesterday. Very easy to do, cheers for the advice. Didn't need to reset it.

There was a bit of gunk in there and a little water as far as i could tell - kind of looked like when you mix oil and water. Haven't been over any big bumps lately, but the light hasn't come one since.

          Hopefully that did the trick!

I would be worth putting a fuel additive in the tank to break up any more water that's in there then run the tank down as far as possible to burn off the suspect fuel.

              no worries, cheers. Will do.

I've been having thoughts about installing a Racor filter before the toyota filter. Is this overkill??

Answer: Is a sure sign that you have Bacteria/fungus present in your fuel tank! (Algae likes sunlight - Fungus likes dark).

I personally would remove your fuel filter and back-flush its content into a cup to see how bad it actually is!...... If there is a substantial amount (Brown slime that grows with presence of water). then i would put an additive (anti-fungus/Bacteria) in there to kill it and change your filter before it takes hold.

Here is a link with an in-depth explanation on fuel contamination.
