  • Horrors of submersion. Out of fuel - but not!

I just got reminded of this & will share it in case anyone finds themselves in the same boat.

Drove into Lake Gregory, got bogged, backed out (after stalling/restarting three times & then having to ride the clutch in low range reverse underwater). Emerged from the swamp with the smell of burning clutch, knee deep in water (inside the car).

Drained her out, dried out all our stuff & continued on the journey. Wasn't til three days later & only 100km from home that the alternator shit itself and we had to get towed in (thanks Bob Talbot). Worst part was that the battery was so low, engine missing, pulled over to swap in the fridge battery & it had also drained so got a jumpstart from a nice couple in.... a Landrover!
    Shame shame shame.

Anyway moral of that story is post river crossing it may be of benefit to CRC everything before driving on.

Next problem I didn't notice til several weeks later. Got to a quarter of a tank (half of the second half in the guauge) and the damned thing ran out of fuel. Again on the tow truck, 20l in, fired up no worries, topped it up and with the 20 it only totalled 140 litres. Where was the rest of the fuel hiding?

Found the breather on the fuel line that runs between the two tank - high up above the rear tank under the boot floor. It was fully caked with mud. Cleaned him out no problems since.

    Hi Gordon

A good reminder. Vehicles dont like water even though they can go through it. When I managed fleet we always had trouble the ones that regularly had to ford creeks and flooded areas.

    cheers

out of interest, and excuse my ignorance... is it a common thing to drive through there? It looks like there is a path. but it also seems a bit scary.

MLC you got that right. I wish Odarprado had kept filming while I backed the sucker out it was quite an ordeal - I though we were screwed.
Wooley it's the top of the Canning as it skirts by Lake Gregory near Billiluna. It is normal to drive there but it was all a bit um.... full... at the time. Took a go'round & got there with no problems. Incidentally came back via Balgo - Kiwirrkura (you wont see that track on your Hemagator) fantastic country & bumped into some old friends along the way.

At the time we were disappearing underwater I was a little more concerned about when to start swimming and what to do with a couple of handfuls of rather vulnerable and expensive camera gear. Must admit it would have made for quite entertaining viewing though!

How far I'm prepared to go...

Shocking news. EOS5d2 not as waterproof as Canon's older SLRs. Don't make'm like they used to. Lucky for me odarprado holding it not me.

Did I mention these cars are pretty bloody amazing. And so many totally wasted on menial duties.

Um.. Did you walk it first?

Glad you got out of it, could have been expensive!

Actually, they do. The 1D's are as waterproof as they ever have been. 5D series not so much, but never was. I've had mine fairly wet, but no dramas...

I made up a at presentation at work titled "Not a boat" which features several pictures of different types of boats, ships, submarines, etc with some included shots of various 4wds and other vehicles submerged in creeks, lakes and oceans. The cars are clearly labled NOT A BOAT. This was after we killed around 6 troopies in a little over a month by taking them onto flooded roadways where common sense should have dictated otherwise. The brake pads and discs on the troopies and prados are shocking and continually need replacing when the cars are driven through water.
