  • Check your shocks!!!

Took the Prado for a run up Teewah & Rainbow Beach yesterday. All going really well and having a blast. Lunch & a swim on Rainbow Beach, then back over through to the Freshwater Track to head up to Rainbow Beach township for a coffee.

Going over a mound on the Freshwater track, the left rear wheel drooped down into a hole, and I heard a clunk. Then after that I could hear a rattle and thudding noise when going over bumps. I pulled over and had a look, but couldn't realy see much or get under the car easily. So I took it slow as we weren't too far from the road.

Got to a servo at Rainbow without any problems, pumped the tyres up, then jumped under for a look. The left rear shock had worn out all the top rubbers, and had popped out of the mount. It was now rattling around on the bottom of the truck. There wasn't much we could do, so we brought it home carefully on the road, and will be pulling the shock off today. A call to ARB will start the suspension upgrades, but as we haven't sold our Fiat 500 yet, we can't afford the full lift kit, so just replacing the rear shocks at this second. Will replace springs & front coils/struts once we sell the car and have some money free.

Pics below. You can see the nut is still on the top of the shock, but as the rubber has worn away, it came straight through the hole. It's small enough to fit through. You can also see the hole where the shock should go, and where the shock is in relation to that hole now. If you look closely, you can also see the marks where the shock has rubbed.

Looking at your pics it looks like the shocks have been incorrectly installed. Shouldn't there be a top washer between the shredded rubber and locking nut? Unless this has disintegrated?

Pic is compliments of Chippy's DIY Suspension Install Thread...

I may be wrong but Im sure both my 95's had a big washer over the top of the rubber before the bolt went on, same as whats in the 1st picture with that coupling over the rubber. Normally it would rattle around if the rubbers are worn but not pull through like that. Was it the standard supension ?? or had it been played around with at some stage for some reason ?? Reckon it just the bolt tightened down onto the metal of the body OR there was a rubber there but has chewed out.. Funny it was the passengers side which is a prick of a job to get to on the 95's especailly if like my lod one you have ABS plus stability control, extra pipe work from the braking system in the way. At least you didnt do any other damage. If you are replacing them I would get the longer shocks so then when you get the rest of it fitted (I presume your talking springs etc when you sell the other car) that way you can do the 2 inch lift. You can do a lift without putting in longer shocks but is a bit pointless as it limits wheel travel with standard shocks (if thats what you have in place now ??). cheers Steve

I've only just recently bought the car, so haven't done any work to anything really (Apart from fitting recovery points onto the front chassis). The shocks are generic black so don't know if they're original or not. They are pretty had it though which I knew upon purchase along with the tyres. I planned on upgrading them both as soon as I sold the Fiat. This issue has obviously brought that forward quicker than anticipated though.

There should be a metal washer there yes. Not sure if it came apart from being loose in there, or what. Either way, ARB has 2 new rear shocks on order to fit for me beginning of next week. The longer travel shocks will work with the standard springs according to them, so that saves me having to replace them again later on.

Thanks for the heads up dan, will definitely go double check my shock this arvo. Sucks that this has happened to you maybe it'l save a few newbie prado owners like me from overlooking a little thing like a missing washer.
On the plus side it's a good excuse to have the raised suspension job done.

Dan be carefully with the longer shocks as they can give u more downward travel and allow the spring if only std height to pop out, hence why the long shocks normally go with raised springs!! Food for thought.

Yeah that was my thinking too Hutch. When I asked the guys at ARB they mentioned that yes that would be possible if I let the suspension drop to full like I did yesterday. I was already resigned to not taking it offroad until I replace the whole lot again anyway, so it's not too bad. It is however the other halfs daily driver, so I need to get it operational again.

Whack some thick cable ties on them for the meantime just to be sure, the will hold them in no problems, should be a whole or two around the top and bottom of where the coil spring sits, only need to catch the last coil but yes I still wouldnt take off road till completed properly, you will hear the spring let go if it decides to but I doubt it for general running around town.Cheers Steve

We rigged up a temporary fix yesterday afternoon. Pulled a rubber and metal washer off an 80 series shock we had spare (much bigger than the paradox one) and put that on the top of the shock. It all went back in ok and bolted up tight. Car drove well with no crazy rattles or bangs, even on the dirt mogul bumps I tested it on. So all happy with that.

New shocks should be here Monday or Tuesday to go in, and hopefully the rest of the suspension upgrade will follow soon after.

We also found the old worn out rubber on top of the top shock mount, but we never found any metal washers that should be on them, so possibly I they were installed wrong whenever they were done in the past.
