  • Broken glow plug tip requires engine rebuild

Hey guys. This is my first post.I recently had a glow plug tip break off in my 04 prado which has required a engine rebuild. My problem is I cant get a head gasket for 4 weeks as it has to come from Japan. You would think that it would be a spare part that was held in Australia but apparently not.Does anyone out there know if any exsist in Oz?.

Hey Jaxon. I had 2 glow plugs break off my 2004 TD during Brisbane floods last year. I ended up replacing the motor - quicker and cheaper - no thanks to Toyota. How long and how much for the rebuild?

I had one glow plug tip weld itself onto the top of one of the pistons in February last year and after $7200 got the car back in May. It happened just after the Tsunami in Japan and they couldn't get parts out of Japan for months. The car is now going through an 'Oil Usage Check' while they monitor how much oil it is using because I estimate it to to be around 4/5litres per 10,000kms. It never used any before the glow plug problem. I think I know what the Toyota dealer who repaired the car will say after the check; "it is within our normal acceptable usage limits so doesn't require anything done"; what do you think??

I have spoken to several mechanics about the tip of glow plugs coming off and I have had many answers from; "I have never heard of that ever happening" to: "the bits usually blow out the exhaust valve and never give any trouble and you never know about it until you look at the glow plugs".

A good friend and master Toyo mechanic (25 years experience) told my mate to stick a magnetic screwdriver into the piston to try to get any fragments out after the glow plug tip broke off in his 2H Troopy. Nothing came out on the magnetic screwdriver... the mechanic then suggested we remove the injector and turn the engine over a couple of times, then put it all back together and see what happens.

My view is that if you're willing to pay for the engine rebuild, then why not just try turning the engine over (which is free) and see if it fixes itself?

            Hey Brian/
Thats alot of oil to be using over 10000 ks.Before this hapened mine hardly used a drop.Could drive from Perth to Exmouth and wouldnt notice a change in the level.Fingers crossed she will be the same after the re build. The car is running great BUT after being in the workshop for 2 months I,ve just found a large crack in the dash where the air bag is..NOT HAPPY!!.

Yes, it is a lot of oil in my view and it is going through an Oil Usage Schedule with Toyota now. It now has 2000kms up since the start of the review and I have to take it in this afternoon for them to check it. I take pictures of cold and hot of the Dip Stick before I take it in so they can't give me excuses.

hi, same thing. broken glow plug damaged piston. engine rebuild estimate NZ $8, 000. 2004, 150,000km. always serviced with toyota, who advise that they do not check glowplugs nor injectors on this model for any service. appears the injectors were out as well. car still with them 5 weeks later, and slow get back if at all. Last toyota.

Not trying to sound like a smarty,
Well you guys, should have all joined the forum sooner & done some research.
The guru "##########" is here & he would tell you change your glow plugs & injectors about every 100k.
                  Have a read......
There's lots of things you can fix before it breaks but, as you know, glow plugs breaking off can be fatal for your engine.
Personally, as a vehicle tech, I can get the Bosch 4 for about. $60, I will change them anytime I have the intercooler off, easy job, save $$$$.
Enjoy the forum & keep sharing.

                    I fully agree with what #### said above, I did the 160k service on my KZJ120 today and replaced the glow plugs. This is what I found;

I think I got a get out of jail card today. If you look closely at the top plug you can see there is a fragment missing and both plugs are obviously cracked.

These plugs are ceramic tipped not like older style ones which have metallic tips, the latter tend to just either melt if overheated (timer relay/relay fault or misuse) or go open circuit in my experience (almost 30 years as a diesel mechanic). The missing piece may well be embedded in the piston crown.

So $21 each from my local Bursons, better than an engine rebuild hey? I would have preferred NGK but they only had Bosch in stock.
I'll be changing them again in another 80-100k.

                    Cheers

                      G'Day John,
How's things going? What glow plugs do you suggest for the D4D. Mine is still under warranty for up to 150,000. I have 45,000 to go.

                      Winston.

P.S I have also ordered a Techstream to check my injectors. Should get it in a month.
                      Winston.

                        G'day mate,

I got Bosch for mine. I'm happy with Bosch gear.
The main thing is, I know that they were changed previous to mine, because if you remember how tight number 3 was when i removed it, I was very concerned.
Lucky I figured out the person that did them before me was an idiot.
It was tight because of the carbon build up in the thread because it was about 1 turn or so off its seat.
Like I always say, if you want it done properly, do it yourself.

I know the man & the tools that tensioned mine up did a perfect job :-) thanks.

I must say I wouldn't go to Rocklea diesel for injectors again, that surface rust was not good at all, I was discusted.

Recently had my 100k service done. My mechanic owns an 04 1kz himself and recommended changing the glow plugs which he did, he also checked the injectors which were fine apparently. Sounds like he knows what he's doing after reading the above posts! As mentioned, it's cheap insurance.
                          Common sense isn't that common.....
