  • Engine coolant drain plug - 1KD-FTV 3.0 D-4D

Hi guys. I would like to renew the coolant in my 3.0 diesel Prado. I've drained some coolant from the radiator drain plug, which release about 6 litres. I'm having trouble finding the engine coolant drain plug. The Toyota manual indicates that it's somewhere on the right side of the engine (from standing in front of the car, this is), but do you think that I can spot the darn thing!
I assume that there's still about 4 1/2 litres in there somewhere. Can anyone help me find it, or tell me what the plug looks like?

    Thanks in advance!

The engine coolant drain plug is on the passenger side (N/S = Near Side) of the engine block. Approx 2" above the engine-mount bracket that bolts to the engine block on the right hand side of the bracket & in between the starter motor. (10mm bolt).

Don't forget to open the heater tap to drain heater core for interior car heater. Then when the drain bolt & radiator drain secured. Top the expansion bottle to the minimum level/ Start the engine/Let engine idle till thermostat opens (Will gurgle/spit then swallow the coolant) then top-up to the max level then let it idle for a few more minutes to make sure all air has been purged out from the block.

    Cheers

Hi Skywalkerrun. Thanks for letting me know exactly where the engine block drain plug was. It was actually concealed by a small mount holding some - what looked like - vacuum pipes. Once that was removed I could the drain plug clearly.

May I ask, when you mentioned opening the heater tap, did you mean switching the heater to the hot setting from inside the car? That is what I did, but I still only drained about another 1.5 litres from the engine drain plug, totaling approximately 9 litres - which is way below the almost 11 litres that the manual suggests the cooling system holds. What's bugging me now, is the fact that I filled and ran the engine 'til warm with plain tap water in order to flush the system out, and then drained again and refilled with coolant and demineralised water (still only about 9 litres in total). I am worrying now that there is about 2 litres of plain tap water in the system somewhere, and that is really bugging me! Should I be concerned? If need be I will buy more coolant and do the job again - but I need to be confident that I'm getting every last drop out of the system.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

          Gday Budgey

When i mentioned to open the heater tap the answer to your question is "yes" i did mean the cabin heater as it opens the tap for the cabin heater core to let the residual drain

As far as draining every drop of water i wouldn't worry about it as 9 out of eleven is good. (Residual is prob sitting in the hoses & parts of the cylinder block. (Unless you want to tip the engine block upside down then you will "not" get every drop out!) teh he.

If you used concentrate coolant just follow the dilute instructions for the total engine coolant capacity and you will be fine. (Usually poor the concentrate in first then followed with clean water upto the minimum level. Once the thermostat has opened (coolant level will drop with gurgling/spiting etc)then top-up to the max indicator marked on the side of the expansion tank with clear water only) Reason for topping to minimum first is because when the thermostat first opens the hot coolant meets the cold coolant & reacts violently and spits most of coolant back out!

If you bought the ready diluted coolant then 2-Ltr of water will not kill its anti-freeze/lubricating & boiling point property's etc so don't stress about it as all will be fine. (If ready diluted only top-up with ready diluted coolant only & "Not" fresh water).

Once happy that thermostat has opened (will see the coolant flow in the expansion tank) then fit the pressure cap & take the car for a casual drive (Not thrash it), Let engine cool down then top-up to max level in the morning if need be!

You might get some leakage from the over-flow spout on the expansion tank as the engine will fined its own level (Approximately the max on the side of the expansion tank)

          Cheers

In that case, everything is great, and I can rest easy after my initial overreaction.ops:
