  • Newbie alert - Best Oil for 2006 GXL?

    Hi All

I am brand new to the forums, just bought a 2006 GXL Prado 130,000km and to be honest I know nothing about it apart from what I have read on these forums (a lot of knowledge around this place).

In an attempt to learn my way around a Prado I recently completed a filter change. Oil + Oil filter, Fuel Filter and Air Filter.

Essentially I bought the oil that the guy from Repco handed me.

    For next time:
    • Is there a particular brand, mix or shape of bottle I should be looking for?

Also how much servicing should I attempt? And when should I hand over the keys to the Toyota dealership?

Sorry in advance for all the questions I will ask in the future :-)

Everyone will have a different opinion, and there are many oils that will work well for your rig.

Go for Genuine filters or Ryco forget the cheapo's on ebay.

If you have a diesel, Mobil Delvac MX, Caltex Delo 400 or Castrol RX Super are all good oils and well priced if you buy in the 20 litre drums.

If you have a petrol, Castrol Magnatec 10w-40, or Penrite HPR 10 are all good just to name a couple.

I'm using mobil delvac esp, supposed to be good for egr engines (we've got it for the new mack at work) put it in today see how it goes. The delvac mx is a good oil too, run it in everyting at work.
      Cheers.

How much of your own servicing that you do depends on your own skill and confidence. I have a 1KZ Diesel. I always do my own oil and filters because they have to be done every 5000km. From start to finish, I can do this service in under 30 minutes, and save myself 100 odd dollars. I also change brake pads myself, air filters etc etc. I wouldn't do glow plugs or injectors because I don't have the tools or experience.

As for oils, I have been using Valvoline Super Diesel for two years and am more than happy with it. I am considering trying a more expensive oil next service just to see if there's any noticeable difference anywhere. Plenty of good oils around though.

        Good luck with the maintenance.

I recently changed my oil brand to Nulon. It is an aussie brand, and I reckon it is better than the others. They recommend a 5-30 grade oil, but I put in 10-30 instead. Car starts very easily, and is much quieter. I will stick with Nulon. (Im not involved with Nulon)

Note that the owner's manual says a 5w oil is preferable. I've run 10 and 15 weights and various brands with no noticeable difference and still get a little confused when I go to buy oil. Being over here in the hotter west, and doing a lot of towing, I need an oil with a higher temperature tolerance.
