  • ideal dual battery charging system when towing caravan

Hi Guys, there are numerous threads out there that cover some of my questions but i thought i would post my situation for those of you that are electrically connected so to speak as i am not one of them.
My 2006 D4D GLX has a dual battery system installed with the aux battery an Allrounder MRV70 connected via a Matson dual battery isolator (140 amp) which states on the cover : cuts in 13.3 v and cuts out 12.8 .
I have an anderson plug wired from the cranking battery which feeds into the jayco discovery offroad caravan to charge the two van batteries while travelling and i also run the fridge on 12 volt while travelling as well. When we stop for short periods say an hour i also disconnect the anderson plug so as not to drain the cranking battery and when we camp i also immediately disconnect the anderson plug and swing the fridge over to gas.
The caravan also has a solar panel on the roof that charges the two van batteries as well. The caravan has a Powertech MP3722 PV charge controller wired with batteries + - and PV + -.
That said, i also run a 12 volt plug fed from the aux battery to the rear of the Prado to run the Waeco fridge. In the past i have found the fridge giving me the death blick when i pear through the rear window in the morning thus indicating a flat aux battery. Since then i have installed the new allrounder but am wondering if there is sufficient charge from the alternater to maintain the charge to the caravan two batteries as well as keep the aux battery topped up as well. I am getting an ABR sidewinder dual battery monitoring system installed so at least i will know when the aux battery is low and then perhaps i can hook up the honda generator to charge the aux battery.
Sorry about the long post but really my question is, what else can i do to ensure the aux battery remains charged or should i install a better alternator or some sort of charging booster as i need to get this sorted before i head off around australia nex year.

    Thanks in advance

Allrounders and D4Ds don't go well, I know I used to run one. Get one of Leigh's voltage boosters and an AmpTech deep cycle (same case as Allrounder) and enjoy cold beer. Déjà vu

Oh and get the Projecta dual battery volt meter

      Frederick,
This is a post I made some time ago and there is a large thread for you to work through.
      http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...205#post150205

To get the charge through to van batteries make sure you use heavy duty cable 6 B&S is the go.
To overcome the need to disconnect the anderson plug when pulled up for short periods install a "fridge switch"
      http://easyrv.com.au/fridge-switch-a...ng-p-6496.html

Also if you have a cable made up (say 6 metres) of 8 B&S with an Anderson Plug at each end (see photo in my above link to old post) this can be attached from van to Car and the charge from solar will feed both van and car second battery.
Having said that it does with my car 2nd battery in back of Prado.
Not sure how to do it if 2nd is under bonnet.

Also would have AGM batteries in van. They charge a lot quicker and discharge slower.

Thanks Gentlemen, I will take all you have said in the above replies into consideration. I will know better once we have commenced our around Auz trip and have had time to sort out the auxillary battery performace. Alot of my documented flat auxillary battery problems were due to the fact that the aux battery i had installed was only a standard car battery that i had laying around in my shed albeit a reasonably new one, and after the issues i had i have since installed a new all rounder on the recommendations of battery world so it will be interesting to see how it performs. Regarding the heavier cable running into the caravan we have done this and tested the system and all indications are that all is normal so only time will time. The Matson dual battery isolator cuts in and cuts out when it should so seems all to be fine.
Once again thanks for all the replies.

          Best regards

frederick, i have almost the same setup , the only difference i made was putting another matson in the van
and running the anderson plug [16mmsq] off the second battery in the prado .
i figured that while stopped , the fridge can still run but it wont run down the second batt in the car .
the second battery will always get first preference from charging and then the van batteries will get charge .
problem is though , even with 14 volts at the van, agm batteries still wont get fully charged .
in the near future i will invest on a redarc dc dc charger and mount it in the van .
good luck with your trip whatever you do mate , i am doing the same thing in early jan ,

            cheers marty

Hi MARTY, yes it is not an exact science is it anyway we will modify as we go if needed. Good luck on your trip as well and maybe we will meet around a camp fire somewhere way out yonder.

              Cheers for now
