  • Low Coolant Level Alarm

I have had on my to do list for a while now to fit a low coolant level alarm, another thread has prompted me to get serious about things. I couldn't find a thread on this subject so here goes.

A couple of options, Redarc have this http://redarc.com.au/products-and-se...-coolant-alarm

And engine saver is here http://www.enginesaver.com.au/

My first point of confusion is regarding electrolysis, the engine saver website says that you must use a DC sensor or you will cause damage to the cooling system, Redarc say they use an AC probe otherwise you will cause damage to the cooling system. So who is right and who is telling porkies?

Apart from that does anyone have any experience with either of these, or any other options?

The engine saver looks like the display might be a bit more compact so probably easier to mount neatly, not sure where I would put the redarc unit.

    Cheers Andrew

I'd be interested in one also.

My chemistry is pretty average but I was under the impression DC was required for electrolysis as AC does as the name suggests, alternates, which means the cathode and anode change constantly... I believe it can occur with either, but in the lab you use DC. When you use AC, i think you end up with Hydrogen and Oxygen and bad things happen.

The engine saver looks like a better installation than red arc. But I have no idea about AC vs DC.

I am similarly seriously considering doing this mod next as well now. From what I read, some think you should install both a coolant alarm as well as a block mounted temperature alarm. Thus, the ultimate in security against over heating.

Thinking about the AC/DC argument and the resulting electrolysis today, it occured to me that the temperature sender unit has a probe going into the coolant with power running to it, I assume this would be DC power and motors have run with this system for decades. Makes me wonder why Redarc say it should be AC!

I have been able to find lots of good reports about the engine saver, nothing good or bad about the Redarc unit though.

DC is needed for electrolysis, AC won't cause any problem.

Did anyone watch the Mythbusters episode where they broke out of prison using tomato salsa and electricity. That was fun!

Generally speaking, that is true. However, introducing AC into the system will cause some chemical reaction. It has to. Given that the amperage and voltage is so low on the Engine Saver unit, and that there aren't any bad words around, then it must be ok.

I wonder if engine saver would do a deal for goup-buy? $190 is a little steep IMO (although good insurance). If you could get one unit that monitored both coolant level as well as engine block/temp level, I would jump at it. If your water pump or something plays up, your engine will heat up quickly but you won't get an alarm as the coolant level hasn't dropped to trigger the engine saver. Seems such a waste to run two units though...

I was going to see the guys at Alltrac tomorrow to see what they may be able to do (they are the suppliers for Adelaide). But if there is someone who has a relationship with the guys already, you might get a better response than me walking in for the first time

Is there an inherent miss trust of the temperature gauge?

If you spring a leak in the coolant system and dump the coolant to the point the sender unit is no longer in contact with coolant the temp gauge won't work, the next sign that something is wrong usuallly invovles very large sums of money being spent on your motor.

Also - even if you don't lose coolant but over heat (say a seized pump or something), unless you are consciously checking your temperature gauge which doesn't really rise til the last minute anyway, you probably won't notice until the damage is done. An audible alarm is the best case for both scenarios.

I have read elsewhere several times that the 1KZ in particular is not a friend of getting hot. Several heads have blown on these engines because of over heating and most of the time people were unaware until it was too late.

I think the new rules make group buys a bit tricky on the forum, unofficially though I am very interested in the engine saver unit.

and coolant level , thinking of an egt probe as well .
                              good looking unit but pricey
