  • Polaris NG 7200 GPS Unit with 2 cameras Installation

I'm installing a Polaris NG 7200 GPS in-dash unit into my 2005 Prado VX Diesel Auto 120 Series (pre D4D) and having trouble finding the Reverse Light + Wire to connect the unit to. Can someone advise me where this is ?

Also, where should I locate the GPS Antenna and pass the lead through ?

There is also a wire tagged "Brake Input" on the rear of the unit. Where should this be connected to ?

It would be so much easier if Polaris supplied installation instructions.

I've checked out other threads but no luck with solving this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Can't help with your problem, but let us know what you think of the unit as I am looking at installing a Polaris in my Prado

When I installed my Polaris I located the gps under the dash to the right of the unit
in the cavity there, works fine. Alternatively you could mount on the dash and run cable
along the bottom of the windscreen in the gap then down through the hole under the pillar
trim if the cable will reach.

As for reverse, I think it was plug and play from memory, just plugged unit in and it worked?

      Cheers

Thanks Leigh. I turned on the unit without connecting the "Reverse Light +" wire or the "Brake Input" wire and it started up just fine. One thing I found - the camera worked when the camera switch was both in the centre position (I think this is supposed to only come on when in reverse) and on Camera 1 position (which I think is correct). I also found the camera itself got pretty hot. Sounds like I need that Reverse Light + wire connected. Thanks for the advice on the GPS antenna.

I'll let you know how the unit performs, Krypto. The rear camera doesn't appear to have good resolution, but perhaps I need to tweak the settings somehow.

I have the NG7200 in my 150 D4D. The reverse wire may be found under the passenger side front scuff plate, at least that's where mine was wired into but I can't say for sure whether it's the same in the 120.
As for the brake input, if you go into settings you can uncheck the brake input so that the video works and you no longer need to connect that wire to anything.
I found the camera to be fine but I can't say that I am completely happy with the unit as sometimes it doesn't recognise the hard drive and I end up having to do a reset to get it to work.
The first unit I installed had problems freezing when I started Oziexplorer and it ended up with Polaris swapping it over for another one which seem to fix the problem (at least on the one time I have played with Ozi)

            Thanks Dobbo,
There's a heap of wires under the scuff plate - How to choose which is the right one ?

I went into Settings and unticked the Brake setting. I wondered why the unit kept telling me I couldn't play movies while driving ... and the vehicle was sitting in the garage, engine off with the handbrake on. According the Polaris Manual, this message should only come on when the handbrake is off ? In any case, the message doesn't come on anymore,so thanks for that. But I still can't see my hard drive when it's connected via the USB port in the glovebox - and when I turn the ignition off, the drive is still running ?

Do the install instructions tell you to connect to reverse etc?

I'm pretty sure with my unit I just plugged it in and everything worked, it
would seem the reverse wires etc were already wired into the stereo
connection plugs. I would have thought this to be the norm as they would
be required for the Toyota sat nav?

The unit didn't come with installation instructions, only operating instructions. The Camera Control Unit did come with a wiring diagram but no mention of where to connect them.

I think you're right about the Reverse wire being already incorporated in the wiring harness at the back of the stereo unit. It's possible the Reverse wire on the back of the Polaris Unit is simply to attach to the blue wire on the Camera Control Box. There is, however, a green wire on the Control Box which is supposed to be connected to the Reverse + Wire. Dobbo mentioned I could find this wire under the front passenger scuff plate. I lifted the scuff plate but wouldn't know which wire to connect to ... There are heaps ??!!

My car is GX so it didn't have a reverse camera although the wiring for it may be there.
There is a post in the 150 section which tells youn which wire to hook into, other than that you may have to use a test light until you find the right one.

Polaris support is very good, give them a call and they'll tell what is required.

                    Cheers

Thanks Leigh, I've sent them an email explaining where I'm up to and have asked them to give me a call. If I don't hear from by this afternoon I'll give them a call.

Hi Dobbo, My VX didn't come with the reversing camera either. I bought the Polaris unit that came with the 2 cameras (car & van). I've checked out the posts on the 150 Series but I think the wiring specs are a little different ? I'll wait to hear back from Polaris but failing that, yes, I'll do a bit of prodding with the test light.

SUCCESS !!! Polaris Tech Support suggested I look for a black & red wire under the passenger side front scuff plate. I followed the wiring loom from there up behind the kick board and found two red & black wires leading into a black wiring harness - One thicker than the other. The location of the wiring harness is a little different to Richo's GX photos. After pulling my glovebox out to find that location, I found my harness was just behind the kick board - no need to remove the glovebox. I have photos but can't seem to attach them - any advice?

I checked which one became live when in reverse using a test light and the thinner wire was the one. I needed to extend the green wire from the Camera Switch a little as it wouldn't reach from where I located the switch - in a blank to the left of the steering wheel. I then bared the wire a little and soldered the green wire to it.

I now have Polaris unit up and running. Now comes the fun part - Learning how to work it !

Thanks to all who replied to this thread. If I can get some advice on how to add photos to illustrate the correct wire location for my model Prado, I'll put them in.

                          Hey Wackoo,

Just to make it clear to others, it is a RED cable, with a BLACK STRIPE. Glad you got it up and running!

OK I need to rant a little here...
                              Does anyone experience the annoying little kooky things with the Polaris that I do? It is 1st world problems but I just hate it when things don't work perfectly the way you expected them too, such as;
                              1. Bluetooth phone book doesn't load, and if it does it only shows the 1st 20 contacts or so, and a lot is doubled up for some reason.
                              2. Bluetooth sometimes doesn't play the ringing sound of the outgoing call, just keeps playing music even though the pick up and answer screen is shown. Sometimes it doesn't even switch to Bluetooth once the call is picked up.
                              3. iPod doesn't pause when talking on the Bluetooth. When the call is ended, the iPod is playing a different song. Most Bluetooth devices I have used will pause the iPod.
                              4. iPod player will pause, play, pause when you turn the car on, so you have to wait then press play
                              5. iPod doesn't always connect to the player, resulting in "unplug and plug iPod back in" to get it to work again.
                              6. I know this can't be changed, but it is annoying how you can't make the navigation voice over play the same time as the music without the music going to mute (or very close to it).
                              7. The lack of install instructions, even though it is simple, is frustrating. I forgot the trigger wire for the reverse camera cause I didn't have the instructions to jump my memory of doing that.

Whew I am done venting now... I know it is small and petty but it just really "grinds my gears!"

                              Cheers.
