  • Caster Adjustment

After I did my 2" lift the steering has felt very light and it doesn't feel like the truck tracks straight by itself (I can't let go of the steering). I've had the alignment done, and the caster is off. IF I understand the adjustment, the caster is actually adjusted using the camber adjuster (I don't understand how this works...), but my camber adjusters are at max setting already. Has anyone else run into this problem? And what is the fix?

All I can find are post on the 4runner forums where they fit aftermarket upper control arms with extra caster adjustment.

If it is not tracking straight, check the rear panhard rod, on the front end, after lifting the suspension by 2 inches, the only thing that needs attention are the camber angles, caster should not change.

Perhaps I should elaborate on the problem. It tracks pretty straight on perfectly flat smooth road, but will dip to one side or the other with the slightest input e.g. road camber, a side wind, a rut in the road, me sneezing with a hand on the steering wheel, etc. This is apparently typical of too much negative caster. I need to get the print out of my recent wheel alignment, but I'm pretty sure it showed out of spec negative caster - the wheel centre did not think this is a problem as it is equal on both sides so isn't causing tyre wear or pulling to one side. The problem is slightly worse if I have to brake suddenly and the nose dives, giving an even more negative caster angle - under extreme braking with the steering turned the truck wants to dive in the direction of the turn.

The panhard rod is fine (with new bushes).

Sounds like the front springs and shocks are too soft, as they are not controling the vehicles directions or angle changes.

Just a quick update. I have this more or less sorted now. The last place that did my alignment clearly did not have a clue. I took it to another place who were able to adjust the caster/camber to just within tolerances, and it feels like a different vehicle now. Not perfect, but WAAAYYY better.

Most tyre shops are pretty useless for wheel alignments. Will only do toe in because the rest is too hard! You need to find a good suspension shop or, like where I work, a good smash repairer that does wheel alignments.
No cars these days run negative castor, its no wonder it was driving like a shopping trolley!

I had really light steering after putting in my 2 in lift.

I found a local mechanic who let me watch and help him do the alignment. Took about an hour but we were able to get the camber, toe in and castor back in spec. We were pretty much at the limits of adjustment.

Adjusting the camber affected the other numbers so you have to adjust and check all the number several times. Can be a pain when you adjust the castor and it throws the camber out. I can understand why places only do the toe adjustment as this was the easiest.

Don't settle for a toe adjustment only. We found that the toe was still acceptable after the lift but camber and castor were way out.

That particular place was actually just outside London in the UK (before we moved over to Oz), so probably not any good to you.

However a few places more local are recommended in this thread.
