  • Century Deep Cycle Battery

I have one of these installed as my aux battery. It is only a 70ah (could be 75am, I'd have to check) battery.
I had an issue last weekend, I drove Sydney to Canberra, the only thing running off the AUX was the fridge.
Over night, and it was not hot, surprisingly, given the start to summer we have had, came out in the morning to find the error light flashing on the fridge. Not having the user manual for the fridge, I checked everything, and all seemed in order, green light was still on, started the car and the red light stopped flashing and turn off.
I am guessing the battery went flat over night..

My question is, in my D4D Prado, with nothing other than the 31l Waeco fridge drawing power, how long would it take to recharge the Century battery?

Other info, Projector 100amp isolator, 6B&S cables, powered fuse box in back, 30amp circuit breaker front and rear, dual cigarette outlets, only one was being used.

Do I need to get the battery checked, or do I need Santa to bring me a new fridge?

    Thanks in advance, Prado Pointers..

I'd say you're not getting enough charge into the battery. Try one of Leigh's voltage boosters.

        D4D, thanks for the reply.
I already have one of the boosters.
I've asked Santa for a CTEK for Christmas, any suggestions on what would be the best model to get??
Looking around Google, I do not think there is enough charge getting to the battery. It is obviously a slow charge and needs about 9 hours or so, charging in the car. Does that sound right??

Do you have on of Leigh's boosters? The battery must have been really down to not get enough charge in it. Get the 10A Ctek. The night before a trip I run the Ctek on mine to get it fully charged. That said since I added Leigh's booster my aux has been charging fine. I'd also measure your charge volts to see what you're getting.

did you upgrade the cable size to the power source where you plugthe waeco in?

a simple and very easy way of doing this is to buy a Waeco RAPS R12U (code from memory so google it to be sure) - Engel also make a similar product for their fridges. it is a very simple and effecient way of buying what you need to upgrade the cable size to suit what your fridge requires. the standard cable sizes run in cars are not sufficient for your fridge

it retails around $119 and comes with everything you need. just run the supplied cable to aux battery, fit the RAPS unit where you have the fridge (simple as screwing it or fixing it to the car), connect the cable from the aux battery to the RAPS, connect cable to the AUX battery, plug in fridge.

the number of flashes of error code thats flashing will tell you whats wrong. i did have all the error cdes but looks like someone has deleted from this computer.

just google the waeco raps and you will see what they look like. they have 2 fittings for power connections so you can fit the fridge and something else at same time. you can also switch it by pushing a button to turn off when engine power is off or when voltage is low (ie the waeco low voltage setting) you can buy from rays outdoors, bcf and auto suppliers or online

            hope that helps, cheers

First off are you sure the battery was down, did you measure the batteries terminal voltage, the problem might be with the fridge and not the charging?

Assuming dual system correctly installed and appropriate cabling used from dead flat shouldn't take any longer than 2-4 hours to recharge, partial discharge 1 - 2 hours.

              Cheers

Oz, I'll check them out, thanks.

Leigh, I have used 6B&S from the battery to the rear, terminated onto a 30amp circuit breaker. A very short length of 6B&S (maybe 4inches) the runs into a powered 'bus' style fuse box. The cables running from that to the socket are normal smallish cables, if that is not correct, I'll fix.
I'll Google the error codes for the fridge, as I said, I am not sure if it is the fridge or the cabling/battery combo.

Anyway, I think I may have a workaround... New fridge just arrived at home (thanks Mrs Santa) and inside the fridge was a battery charger, not a CTek, but it is an 8 stage Nitro branded 6amp charger...

Now, next question. Using the Nitro, do I remove the battery from the car, or at least disconnect it before hooking it up???

Leigh, I am measuring approx 13.81volts when car is running, on both the main battery and the Aux, does this sound right for one of your boosters??

                Thanks All.

No you don't need to disconnect the battery to charge it with the charger.

The 13.81V was that at idle, or driving?

13.81V is low unless you measured it at idle, it should be around 14.2V at 1500RPM with fully charged
batteries and all accessories turned off.

                  Cheers

It was just at idle, I turned as much off as I could, stereo, lights etc...
I'll test again and have the revs up a bit...

                    Thanks for the advise mate...
