  • Bump in rear

When I hit a medium sized bump there is a harsh thump in the rear. I think it may be the rubber dampers unside the rear springs. They seem quite hard, Any idea's?

Can you describe it better please, and FYI the dampers (shockies) are seperate to the springs, they are not located inside the springs.

the thump si most probably the rubber stops inside the springs... your spring has gone too soft and you may need a stiffer one or use an airlift (airbags) inside the spring. try to search for airlift 1000...i have been using it for 3 years...no need for new and expensive springs...airlift 1000 is just around 90USD...30mins to install....

Could be a number of things. Check these first.
        Rear door hinges worn.
Worn shock absorber rubbers in top mount.
        Loose jack.

???????? rubber stops inside the springs???????? there are none, the only rubber parts are the bump stops and top spring mounts.

It's probably just that most of your rear bushes need replacing causing a harsher ride and maybe the suspension in the rear is too stiff or really old. It could even be the vehicles tool kit in the rear left compartment not secured probably and has a little up and down movement and thumps. I'd start by removing the jack and tool kit, and drive over some bumps again. I take it you get the exact same sound when hitting a sharp speed bump in a shopping centre carpark at slow speed to, huh?

oh- so you have none..sorry about that. i have cones before inside the springs...anyways, you said that the thump is harsh so my guess are the bump stops.
by experience before i replaced my rear arm and pan hard bushings, they do not produce a harsh thump...

It sounds like a rubber mallet hitting the floor in the back. The shocks are KYB and the bushes all seem good. There is definitely large rubber dampers inside the springs. They have about 20 mm clearance between the bottom of the rubber and the diff.

The rubber stops inside rhe springs seems to be quite hard compared to the ones on a mates at work. I suspect they might have gone hard and/or the shocks are R/S. I tryed the rebound test - OK but it could be different on a speed hump.

I don't think the bump stops having gone hard is the issue. It shouldn't be hitting the bump stops on a regular basis unless you're driving too fast over obstacles or there is an issue with the springs and/or shocks. Have you got a lot a weight in the back? Your springs may not be suitably rated for the load you're carrying and/or may have sagged. Failed shocks could also be the culprit but there be more noticeable handling issues if that were the case.

Bump stops dont make a noise if contact is made with them. It could be anything from a body mount to a bent or dented or loose shocky.

Another thing that can cause a clunk in the rear when driving over bumps is if the tail shaft slip joint is either running dry or over filled with grease.

Another question for you BigAl, when do you hear the clunk? Is it at the top of the bump or when you are coming off it? I.e. could the clunk be the shock topping out after the compression? If the shock has poor compression it may be allowing to extend to quickly and is topping out?

the mallet type sound is I believe the rubber stops hitting the bottom part of the spring cradle... you can feel that thump all over the chassis nad the vehicle when it hits.. usually, this happens after going over a hump with considerable speed or when you're loaded and hit a medium hump..

I have replaced all my rear bushings- UCAs, LCAs, panhard bar, shocks and still, the thump was there. it only stopped when i installed the airlift 1000. my friend just suggested that instead of buying expensive new springs.

the rubber stops inside the springs are really hard- it feels like there is metal inside and was just covered by rubber skin...it's either you replace the spring to a stiffer one or an airlift (again) .
