    Hi there guys!
    I'm a new member looking into the possibility of a DIY timing belt change. I have a 2004 3.0 D4D Land Cruiser Prado that was originally registered in the UK, but now lives with me in Bulgaria. I have just passed the 90,000 mile stage, and the timing belt light has illuminated on the dash. I am almost 500km from a Toyota service centre, so I don't particularly want to risk the drive, and would prefer - if possible - to try to swap the belt out myself. I'm not pressed for time, as the car doesn't need to be on the road for over a month. I wonder if some of you experts would be able to answer a few questions for me:
    • Are there any pitfalls I should look out for - apart from the obvious one of making sure all the pulleys are lined up correctly?
    • Will I need any special tools? (the manual I have talks about using a press to set up the tensioner - although it's not very clear to me, I must admit).
    • Should I renew the idler pulley and tensioner? (if I do, will the aforementioned press no longer be required?)
    • Given the mileage, should I change the water pump at the same time for piece-of-mind?


    If anyone can help me with the above questions, of if there are any other tips or guides that would help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to pradopoint

    I would only attempt to do the timing belt your self if you are handy with a spanner and mechanically minded as the wrong mistake could be costly! (EG: High press pump timing a mile out! Pump is driven by the cam shaft only so at least you cant bend inlet exhaust valves).

    Special tools needed:

    10mm socket to remove timing cover, 10mm allen key to remove idler pulley, 2mm allen key to lock down the belt adjuster when re-fitting.

    6 x 10mm bolts holding on cam-belt cover, 2 x 10mm bolts holding on the belt tensioner, 1 x 10mm allen key bolt holding on the idler pulley and that is it!

    You should change the cam-belt idler pulley with the belt but that's your call and just re-set tentioner & lock it down with 2mm allen key and re-use it!

    Water pump is also your call? If not leaking at the pump leave it!

    TIP: when lining up the timing marks on both camshaft & fuel pump put the car in top gear with handbrake off (Make sure car not on a hill or it will roll away).... Lol then roll the car forward till both timing marks on both pulleys line up. (If car is an auto then that mean,s you have to turn the crank pulley with a socket which suck's!

    PS. If you do not feel confident to do the job then any local mechanic workshop close to home would be able to do this job easy!

      Hi Skywalkerrun

      Thanks very much for the welcome, and such a comprehensive reply to my post!

      I'm pretty mechanically minded, and I'm really keen to get working on the Prado, starting with servicing and general maintenance, and hopefully leading to a few mods like suspension lift, wheels and tyres, snorkel and bull bar. This wealth of info on this site has really motivated me!

      I think I will listen to you and - provided that there are no leaks - leave the water pump for now. The timing belt procedure seems reasonably straight forward, so if I need to revisit it some time down the line to renew the pump, so be it. I will, however, renew the idler pulley as advised.

      I do have the Toyota manual, and it talks about resetting the tensioner in a press. Are there any tips/instruction you can provide with regards to resetting it? I have a vice, will that do the job? Obviously I will check the tensioner beforehand for any leakage, and to ensure that the protrusion is correct.

      Thanks again for providing the links for the timing belt light reset procedure, they are brilliant! I'm looking forward to getting my hands dirty now!

        If you're going to the effort of changing the belt, you may as well change the tensioner. If you don't you might find it starts to squeak as it ages more. I made this mistake on my previous car. It was a 3 hour job to get the timing cover off, the cost of the part was minor compared to the labour to do the job twice.

        Not sure about the valves bending as mentioned in the previous thread. I believe the fuel pump is gear driven off the crank shaft. The cam shaft is belt driven off the fuel pump. If the cam shaft timing is out relative to the pump and the engine is an interference design, bending valves will still be an issue if mis-align the timing marks.

          Sorry gxl_d4d but i think you have the wrong engine

          The 1KD-D4D has gear driven camshaft and the high pressure fuel pump is driven by the cam belt only but now i will have to look into it more and make sure i'm not wrong

          Wow! 3hrs to do the cam belt?? Can't be the same engine that i am talking about surly!

            Not found a diagram of the fuel pump yet but it looks like i need a peace of humble pie as it is looking like the fuel pump is gear driven so when i find a diagram i will link to it

            The rule still applies as far as always time engine before removing the belt and check belt timing before turning the engine over. (If pump is geared then bending valves will happen if timed wrong!).

            Gee! It is good how forums keeps you on your toes!

              Seems logical. I would love to see a diagram if you are able to find one - just so I can learn some more about this engine.
              In the meantime, my plan is to swap the belt, idler pulley and tensioner. And , even though I was going to be really careful when it comes to lining the pulleys up, I will be double careful and rotate the engine manually from the crankshaft (I have an auto trans) to ensure everything is turning freely before I even think about starting her up.
              Now to source some decent quality parts - not so easy in Bulgaria! :neutral:

                "DO NOT" use your personal VIN number when searching for your car! Instead do a manual search. (NEVER use your personal details! (Its rule #1 on the web).

                For your car EG:Europe/2004/Toyota/Land Cruiser Prado/KDJ120/RHD/ATM/ then select your gearshift type!

                Here you can see "EVERY" part that is associated with your car and part numbers so its easier to track down parts

                Once you have opened an account and selected your car go to Engine/Fuel/ - Crankshaft & Piston. Look for Part No:13613E & you will find the Injector pump gear which is driven by the crank shaft which drives the High Press Pump! (Geee! .....This Humble pie is really hard to swallow!!) Lol

                  Previous car had a 1uzfe. The belt was behind an alloy cover. Had the pull a few things off before the timing cover came off. The water pump was behind the cover as well. Most places charge 8 hours labour for the timing belt on these engines. It was sensible on these engines to change everything under the timing cover including the front main seal, idler and tensioner.

                  Bloody good motor. Had a an eaton M90 putting out 8psi strapped to the top. Had lots of grunt.

                    Just had a look @ the 1uzfe engine and the eaton M90.

                    Was it the GS400 Lexus 4ltr with a supercharger on it? Sounds like it had allot of get-up &-go!

                    Now i see why it took so long to do the belt change! hence the "Do-All whilst the engine is apart"

                    Thankfully the D4D cam-belt is some what "MUCH" simpler.

                        Hi guys! Did the timing belt yesterday and it all went smoothly. I really enjoyed the job actually. I was able to get main dealer parts, so it was worth the wait. I changed the idler pulley along with the belt, and I just reset the tensioner - it was deemed to be fine after measuring, checking tension and checking for leaks as advised in the Toyota manual. The one small issue I had was trying to get the cable clip off from the timing belt cover, but that eventually came off after about 10 minutes of relentless fiddling! I reset the timing belt light according to instructions provided by damonat. Thanks again to all that helped, your advice was invaluable!

                            I definitely hope it inspires others! The one thing I found really handy, was using my mobile phone to squeeze down and take a photo of the lower fuel pump pulley - this made it really easy to clearly see that it was lined up correctly (see pic).
