  • When does the turbo spool up on D4D

First diesel and turbo, so would appreciate some knowledge.

Does the turbo kick in via electronics, or purely driven by rpm or exhaust?

Reading about the turbo needing to cool down, we live at the bottom of a long hill, so have always used engine braking in the car to manage speed on the way down.

Naturaly this translates into high rpm. Will the turbo therefore be humming too, and require a little rest before turning off, or because there's no load, will it in fact not be doing anything, so can to turn off without the wait?

Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

The turbo in the D4D is always working to some degree, the amount of boost is
dependent on engine RPM, engine load, amount of torque request from driver ie
    accelerator pedal position.

If the engine has been under heavy load, ie climbing a hill, rapid accelleration, high speed, pulling
a heavy load etc then the turbo will be hot due to the high volume of hot exhaust gas
going through it and should be allowed to cool down before turning off the motor.

In your case, as you would have the throttle closed while going down the hill the
engine would not be producing any real power and therefore no hot exhaust gas due
to no load on the engine and cooled so you should not have a problem.

To support Leigh's comments it is interesting to watch the EGT show temps over 500 degrees (578 is the highest I have seen) degrees at the dump pipe (immediately out of the turbo) as I pull my camper up some steep hills at 110, and then drop to below 300 degrees in seconds as I go down the other side with the foot off the accelerator.

Thanks a lot for the notes guys. I appreciate it.
MidLifeCrisis, I realised from your post, that I should be able to monitor it, as I've got one of those engine monitoring dongle things on order.

hi MLC, im am interested to know that if you had a larger dump pipe installed with an egt gauge , had you noticed any real need to slow down and let it cool more than if you had left it standard ? i have had an 2.5 inch straight through installed on mine and am curious as to wether i need a gauge . thanks in advance for any feed back

hey marty no real need for an egt gauge unless you have a chip or you just want to monitor the temps egt, temps are higher due to more fuel being injected due to the chip doing its job. cheers samo
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

              is that 500 degrees F or 500 degrees C??
I think the default ChipIt EGT module is degrees F

When you use engine braking in the D4D and most other modern diesels you actually use no Diesel at all, hence the only heat produced from the engine is from friction which is bugger all. Last year when we Camped at Eungella we headed out in the morning and straight down a very long windy hill using the engine braking, the engine was still cold when we got to the bottom which was a bit of a lesson for me as I wouldn't want to do that every day.

                Cheers Andrew

Andrew is right, a modern diesel will not use any fuel if engine breaking.
they will start injecting a tiny amount when the engine revs drop below about 1500rpm to keep the engine running smooth

and i can vouch for the Eungella range (i live at the top) and if i have to drive my partners 2.5 common rail navara down, it will still be cold at the bottom (so will the v6 prado (same theory i.e.. no fuel)

True, as long as the road speed is greater than equates to the idle speed of the motor
the ECU will turn the fuel off, 40Km ~ 60Km in an auto else it would stall. ) Therefore only
heat in the exhause gas will be from engine compression and latent heat picked up from the motor etc.

                    Cheers

hi thanks samo , i forgot to mention that i do have a chip installed . the exhaust i bought does not have a probe mount for the egt ,
im going to be towing a van across oz soon , should i invest in a gauge as i have heard conflicting comments outside of the forum ?

                        thanks , marty

The engine monitoring thingo that you are getting I pressume is a scangauge, when you fit it you will see on the fuel consumption settings that is reads 0.0 when braking or engine braking.

                          Cheers Andrew
