  • OME HD Springs for 90

    Hi,

We've just taken our vehicle in to ARB to have the suspension checked as it was leaning to the drivers side front and the rear was sagging lower than the front,

The springs we currently have are as follows:

    Front : OME 881
    Rear : OME 892 300KG

They have suggested to us that the front springs need swapping over, the drivers is about 13mm lower than the right hand side which they say "maybe" because the A & B springs for the font were put in on the wrong sides, and also that spacers are need for the rear. We have them installed for the last 16months, with about 200KG of weight.

Is it normal to have A & B side springs and are spacers needed as standard for 300KG hd springs?

Dont know why you would need any extra spacers added especially with heavy duty springs. I had middle of the range OME springs and shocks/struts in both my 95's and never had an issue with sagging or leaning and was running a steel ARB winch bar, towing camper and rear cargo loaded when we went away. Who fitted the springs in the first place ?? Was it done by ARB ?? do you have receipts for it if it was you that had them fitted. Reason I ask is if they fitted them and now they are saying they are in the wrong way then guess who should be replacing them ?? Other wise get the mother inlaw to swap sides occasionally when she's sitting in the back seat lol..................Never heard of spacers been needed after a spring/shock upgrade. Regards Steve

I'm fairly sure the springs are directional (A&B). At least for the rear they should be to compensate for the weight of the sub tank. At the front end, OME use 5mm coil spacers (elegantly called trim packers) to compensate if the car leans one what or the other.

I'm surprised they are recommending coils spacers for the rear. I think they're illegal in Australia.

Steve, the "trim packer"s are only used in one strut if the car is leaning. I think they put them under the spring where they are concealed by the lip around the spring seat. I'm told I have one installed on the passenger side but I can't see it.

            Thanks for the responses,

The Springs and shocks were installed in the UK before we left, not by ARB. So ARB are being quite good working on it, if someone else caused the issues,

I was a little concerned they were swapping the springs over from one side to the other, as the shock had signs of wear / rubbing on it suggesting the coil may be faulty, does anyone else have any signs of wear on their shocks?

williade, do you know where i can find out if rear spacers are legal / illegal in Australia? I would prefer them to change the springs than to put spacers in.... especially if the spacers are not standard for these springs and its just patching the sagging.

I'm not sure where to find the documentation stating that spring spacers are illegal, but the trim packers used for the front springs, I'm told, are 100% legal when used as per ARB specifications. I'm not sure what the difference is in the eyes of the law between an OME "trim packer" and a coil spacer. Maybe coil spacers are okay if they are used on a strut?

I just spoke to ARB and they confirmed coil spacers in the rear are illegal, not sure why they told me they were adding them, when i asked what they were doing with the rear now, i did not really get an answer.

But they are putting a "spacer" on the front right shock to stop it rubbing against the spring, does any one know if a spacer is normally needed on the front shock ?

Luckily we have a call with someone from their corp dept on Monday, so will head south and pop into another store when we have a clearer plan to remedy the issues,

We will have the loaded measurements shortly too, would be interesting to see how these compare with others,

If the car sits level without the trim packer they don't need to use any or they might use them in both to give you some extra height.

I just checked mine and you cant actually see the spacer but the coil with the spacer sits higher in the spring seat.

We have the car back form ARB, the front is a lot better than before:

                    - Front (left / right / avg): 795 / 790 / 792 mm
                    - Rear (left / right / avg): 777 / 770 / 773 mm

The rear is still lower than expected,

ARB tried to explained to us that they took all the springs out and measured each one, which they are saying is within their guidelines, the explanation for the rear sag is that the vehicle is over weight.

This is where ARB and we disagree, as we know there is less than 300KG of extra weight above normal load, when we first took the vehicle to them it was empty, with the majority of the weight out the car the measurement for the back was maybe 5mm higher, (say 782, 775)

They did state that changing the springs would not make any difference, i guess the question is are they actually rated for 300KG?

How does this compare to others?

Im suprised with the lift you get with the heavy duty springs. I only got 37mm approx on the front and a full 50mm on the rear on both of mine but using medium spring rate, those heavy duty springs obviously make a big difference.....300kg is pretty heavy weight sitting in the rear, thats like 3 of me so myn would definately be sagging if I had that weight in the rear of my old 95's.

""with the majority of the weight out the car the measurement for the back was maybe 5mm higher, (say 782, 775)""

Not sure whats going on there ??? I suppose a way of looking at it is if you had 300kg on your tow ball (I know its further back the the cargo area but not by much) I dont think there is any 4wd's in this range that take a 300kg downforce ?? Maybe you need some rear airbags to assist in the weight ?? Not sure if that would be the way to go or not.............Regards Steve

                        Hi Martin,
How much weight do you have in the front? Do you have a V6 or a Diesel? Yours rides about 20mm higher at the front than mine and mine is supposed to have HD springs in the front. I have a steel bar, winch and a 4mm bash plate.

These are my measurements with HD springs in the front with the weight mentioned and MD springs in the rear and <100kg of extra weight in the cargo area.

                        Rim-flare (mm) (Driver/Passenger)
                        Front: 770/770
                        Rear: 775/780

There's some more measurements here: http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post302464

                            My opinion:
Your front seems a tiny bit high, and the rear is definitely low. Obviously both of these symptoms are due to the weight in the back.

ARB do good kits for day trippers but I get the feeling they suffer in the rear with heavy touring. Mine definitely drops when loaded for touring, but I have medium OME's.
