  • Battery life

Just wondering if anyone has comment on approx. expected battery life - diesels are supposed to kill batteries quicker than petrol - mine is 5YO Nov 06 D4D, no add ons, battery is fine so far except when I left the back door open for a day and a half...duh...home recharge fine

the battery in my 80 series diesel was 7.5 years old and still going strong
then the battery hold down let go and the battery jumped into the AC pully chewing a hole in the battery.

If you have any concerns, I'd suggest that unless you have the tools to check its condition yourself (hydrometer/voltmeter) that you take a trip to your local Auto Electrician to get it checked before any big trips you have planned. I know mine does it without charging a fee.

I try and make a habit of doing this as I know with an automatic that if I am by myself and the battery dies, I am inbetween a rock and a hard place.

Having a second battery that has the ability to be used as a cranking battery certainly helps ease my mind.

I also have it so that both batteries are not the same age, which hopefully reduces the likelihood of both dying on me at the same time. On top of that, I also invested in a C-Tek battery charger to help reduce the likelihood of being stuck.

3yrs is generally the rule for start battery. If you get 3 then you're doing well. Anything after that is a bonus.

            cheers

My original battery was 25 mnths old when I went to Europe for 5 weeks. Meant to put it on the C-tek but forgot. When I got back it was down to 11.5v (just the alarm and Couplertec running) and all cells nearly into the red on the hydrometer. I didn't trust it after that as it didn't seem to hold the charge for long so got an Optima.

One would assume the cranking amps involved with a diesel being around 700 -800 CCA compared to 400-500 CCA with a petrol. But who knows...

This would not be a case of the diesel ruining the battery, but more incorrect battery selection.

                      battery life

Sorry to rain on your parade mate but my 2006 D4D with original battery died out west in june this year, i got a engine management light come up on the dash then battery was dead in the morning. I was able to fire up using my dual battery sytem but decided to get NRMA out to install replacement battery.

NRMA tech was not sure engine management light would go out even after fitting new battery but thankfully it did.

So what i am saying is better to change the battery now as you are running on borrowed battery time.

When the battery died on my old Rav I got talking to the guy I got the replacement from, he was saying under general use, with the Toyota factory batteries most people got on average around 7 years from them, mine was just a few months over that when it went. He then went on to say that the replacement would last 3-4 years, mine had just ticked over 3 1/2 when I sold it and on the cold mornings over winter just gone it had started to be noticeably slower cranking than when it was new, I was planning on a new one before next winter. Obviously I suppose if you buy better batteries I would guess they would last longer.

                        Cheers

I'm about to trade in my July 2007 Hilux SR5 TD ute. The original main battery is still good as gold. But what has probably helped save it is the fact that I'm now on my third aux deep-cycle battery (ARB dual batt system). Running a fridge and 5 radios all the time kills batteries, but helps save the main battery.

Also have a (Oct) 2006 D4D, on the same battery since new (4y 9m), and was getting weak, so bought an NRMA replacement before a recent trip CCA850, RC175, and I think it was just $210. Mr NRMA actually suggested keeping the old battery, knowing it still had some life, and that we were just getting this other battery as an insurance policy. When we returned, I just put the old one back in figuring it might go a bit longer, and so far so good, no problems, who knows, maybe six months, maybe tomorrow?

I actually wonder if the Prado low charging voltage is actually designed to generally improve the life of the battery, and that the inclusion on the diode to raise the alternator charging cutoff voltage by the 0.6 volts(?) has a negative impact on battery life?

Tassie Tiger is probably right though...
