  • Zero Compression Number 1 Cylinder - 48,ooo kms

    Hello All,

Was driving to Merredin last Thursday, sitting on 110km on the cruise control, Next thing smoke every where.
Pulled over and the car was shaking all over the place. Luckily I was only 20 km out of town. I got towed into Merredin Toyota and they said that number 1 injector was not working at all, number 3 was only just working and number 4 had issues...
Friday I was told that number 1 cylinder has Zero compression and they suspect a hole in the Piston.

I am going to call them again today to find out what they found after pulling the head off the motor.

Its only done just over 48,000km since new in December last year.

Has any one else had similar troubles??

Bit of bad luck Ben. Just another reason why i will not get a diesel, have a look in the diesel 120 and 150 sections their are plenty of threads about the diesel injectors. You might want to grab a coldy as u will be their for a while.

      Good luck with it all.

Hutch: All you have to do is compare the number of threads the diesel forums (except the 90 series diesel 'cause there's hardly any of them) to the number of threads in the petrol forums, for plenty of reasons to avoid diesel.

Here you go, this guy lost number three (cracked piston) http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...d&daysprune=-1

What brand of fuel have you been using?

I must also say that the vast majority of 150's sold are diesel, I believe it to be in excess of 85%. With that number on the road I would expect to see a lot failing if this was a big issue. Don't get me wrong, Toyota definately need to address any design fault but my understanding is that the injector problem was rectified in the 120 so why should it resurface on the 150?

              Hi All,

Attached (hopefully) is the photo of the number 1 Piston that is cracked in half !!

I have been told that they are replacing all 4 pistons and number 1 injector.

Even though its getting fixed it still leaves me with a "48,000km Lemon, what next" taste in my mouth.

Lucky I was close to a town when it went, I travel all over WA for work, about 5000km per month, lucky i wasnt out in the desert when it happened, might have been a bit more serious stuck out there.

As with all mechanical devices sometimes things go wrong. By the sounds of it your injector has crapped itself, fired directly into the centre of piston and that part of the piston has gotten hot and cracked. A very small problem has gone bad.

I wouldnt worry about it being a lemon. If cars didnt break down we wouldnt need warranty would we?

You should be fine once its fixed and it could happen to anyone in any car anywhere.

                  Be happy.

I must say that is the second one we know of on prado point (see my earler link). Is Roo right, can this be cetane level in fuel and/or bad injector design? I must say that this sort of thing was kind of unheard of in the 100 series landcruiser.

I would think possibly "cheap" injector design. With the fuel rail pressures obtained in common rail injection systems, small faults very quickly turn into major failures.
Toyota diesels are not highly stressed by any means with relatively low outputs in comparision to other makes of diesel engines.
In my opinion, Toyota appear to have made a corporate decision to only do just enough to meet emisions etc, the apparent ongoing issues with injectors would seem to indicate a lack of development ie money spent.

It is a shame that such a great vehicle should have an average engine.

                      Just my thoughts

On the issue of taking this technology into remote areas of this country, myself, my opinion, I just don't trust it. Give me one of the older style diesel engines any day, eg. 1KZ, 1HZ, 1HD-FTE, 3L, 5L-E, etc..

Roo, how much smoke should these engines push out under hard acceleration albeit briefly and can such an issue be an early indicator of injector problems occurring?

Is this pooling of fuel on the piston directly related to the injector/engine rattle issue?

We have to remember this motor has been around for at least a few years now. People often talk about the reliable "old" motors like the 1HZ with its indirect injection, tendancy to crack pre-combustion chambers and heads or the 1HD with its tendancy to turn bearings. Yep, these motors had some issues too, and in the case of the 1HD the bearing issue was accepted by Toyota anb fixed and the 1HD is a much sought after motor in an 80 series.

I am sure in 10-15 years time we will be seeing (or posting) on forums what a great motor these D4D's were and how the new breed of diesel's are unreliable.

I feel for the poster with the damaged motor and hope that Toyota fix it to be as good as new and there are no more issues with it, but if you look around at the number of Prado's and Lux's with the D4D motor there is a large number of them out there doing a good job pulling 22' vans, driving lots of rough dusty dirty road, heaps with after market performance chips and exhausts and a relatively small number of complaints about their reliability.
