  • Highest reliable tune with Chip-It chip?

Sorry mods for creating another thread about Chip-It but I think since quite a few of the members here have them I think sharing the following information could be useful to other chip owners.

So what is the highest tune you can run without getting an engine light? ie. low fuel pressure code. Which is when the fuel limiter valve is force open under high pressure and excess fuel is sent back to the tank.
The reason I'm wanting to know is because I went to the extreme trouble of fitting the fuel limiter disk and after running it for awhile I'm questioning if it was worth the trouble since the highest tune I can run so far out of the 15 is 7.

    So, Chip-It owners please list.

1.Highest tune level reached without engine light coming on? (this can literally take weeks)
2.Have you installed the fuel limiter disk?

Just trying to save other members time and or money by not installing the disk if it has no real benefit.

Give it awhile and the engine light will come on I guarantee it.

My personal experience was tune 4. Any higher than is would see the engine light come on within a few km's of driving. It arrived with tune 5 installed and I got the engine light after a few km's on the road between port and south. The fuel limiter disk is not fitted yet as I'm wondering what sort of effect this would have if the engine needed to be repaired under warranty, if anyone has info on this I'd appreciate it greatly. I'm happy so far with the power level but would love to tune it up one or two notches more.

          Cheers,

          Chris.

Barry it is a different vehicle. the 150 as all Toyos have pretty good springs in the limiter. They take more to set them off.

In all cases however no one can tell you where each car will have the spring open as each spring value is different. (mass produced parts)

They do have a somewhat standard spec but we have seen them differ between same family of engine. (both higher and lower)

Just try each tune to see where your one peaks.

            Hope this helps

Driving to Townsville from Mackay yesterday and after overtaking a truck the check engine light came on. Plugged the scan tool in and it was the good old Low Fuel Pressure code again.

That was on Tune 7 so now I'm on Tune 6. It took a few months for it to come up on Tune 7 but nether the less it was the same set of circumstances that caused it to come on ie; Full throttle high engine load due to high speed (140 kays) sudden release of the accelerator. Engine still revving and driving HP pump hard and no where for the fuel to go since the injectors where not letting any out. Only way out via the fuel limiter hence the engine light.

It is comforting to know that the engines in-built protective measures still work with the chip on. But after the effort of putting the limiter disk in a tune or two is only gained.

                Correct Barry.

Also the problem you are experiencing is a weak fuel limiter spring. A lower tune will fix the issue however, check out our website for Chip It up-spec'd limiters. It will take care of the problem you are experiencing and allow you to run higher tunes.

Also, on some Prado's we find that if the earth strap on the Chip is not placed directly on to the NEG battery terminal the resistance (impedance) is too high and this will also throw up a code. Just confirm that you have placed the earth to the neg battery terminal if you are experiencing this error

What tunes are people running who are driving their vehicle during 35+deg days?

Looking at the weather forecast that would be people in Alice Springs or people living along the top-end.

Just a thought on the original question. There are 2 chips. The old one goes to tune 5 I Think and the newer type (been around for a year goes to tune 15.

While I have a 120, I use a modified tune 8. I openly admit it blows smoke at the take off. BUT I have never had a code through whilst the chip has been installed and that is more than 12 months. I have thrown 2 codes (1251) when laving the loom in place and plugging off the chip. This is therefore not a chip problem.

As for temperatures, well everything from 2 degrees to 42 degrees, long drives from SA to WA and back under a very heavy load, and of course heaps of off road work.

For the record I did not install the fuel limiter disc.
