Different problem IMO, the fix published by Toyota thus far addresses the hesitation (as they call it) on downshift in the auto.

hi riv can i get the tsb reference number please, toyota is telling me this problem only relates to autos only, ive told them it is a engine management issue and it has nothing to do with the tranmission, going to see another dealer later this week hopefully the can fix the issue
        cheers mate

I also have a manual diesel with the same problem. Appears to happen when using light throttle in 6th gear. Spoke to the dealer and has no fix as yet. Could be a fuel mapping/boost control issue. Let me know how you get on with the dealer. Best of luck.

            hey lug,
sorry to hear you have same problem, also glad to hear- if there is more than one out there doing it then maybe toyota might listen, my truck has been back to the dealer 6 times to fix the problem, the main problem is toyota wants to capture on the scan tool and record what is happening, the missfire is intermitted- how often will your truck missfire?
i have proved it is not the fuel quality, toyota tried had to blame poor fuel quality.
how many times has your truck been back and what have they said?
            cheers mate

Toyota tried to tell me I must have been using poor quality fuel... Was amusing when I produced every single fuel receipt (all BP) documenting every km the vehicle has travelled.

it is so frustrating when you have a unqualified service manager who wont listen to you- if it isn't in the service manual trouble shooting section it does'nt exist- what a load of BS,
i have been using caltex vortex from the one servo close to home (just been built 2yrs ago- new tanks). the servo bloke looks after me and tells me when they recieve diesel so i can keep away for atleast 2 days- he even calls me to say they recieved a delivery early, its bad when the servo bloke has more sense than a service manager, as a precaution i drain my water seperator every 2 weeks and change the filter every service.

                  Missfire or hesitation?

A true misfire will be like an automatic weapon......i cant type the noise but quick missing.

Hesitation is different, like the fuel has been cut off for half a second.

If its more a hesitation it could be that the larger diameter tyres combined with a bit of weight has moved the speed/powerband mix so you are in 5th far too early for where the engine is in the power band.

If it doesnt do it in the other gears then it is related to the engine being under load.

Not sure if that helps much but a clearer indication of the problem may get it fixed.

I would cut the repairer a bit of slack. If they cant get it to do what your saying its doing, there is no fault code on the ecu, no water in the fuel or any other issue, what do they do? When I was on the spanners I often had issues like this and they are bloody frustrating. Everything checks out fine yet you know there is an issue just cant find it. When I first started as an apprentice we had a tipper that would just stop dead. We would travel out to the jobsite and it would start. Went on for months and months. Turned out to be a piece of plastic off the diesel filler pump had dropped in the tank and every now and then blocked the outlet......

                  Good luck.

The best advice is to use an iphone or similar to record it doing it. Then you can show them and they can get their head around it a bit.

If you can get it to do it consitantly, take the mechanic for a test drive and show him,
sometimes it's difficult to replicate if you have a different driving style.

                    Cheers

thanks for the input, it's a missfire been doing it since 10,000km with original tyres (speedo now 46,500km) coopers fitted 45,000km and loving them, it happens at approx 80-85kms, 2200-2400rpm after changing from 4th to 5th, slight incline or flat ground- light to medium throttle, again 80-85km travelling in 5th with cruise on, also with cruise on in 6th at 110-115km, i know im hard on the service manager- the first 2 times it went in for the miss it actually missed for them (that never happens) and they recorded the snapshots, 3days after the second trip the service advisor in charge was fired and deleted mine and other customers info, since then its been back 6 times approx 1-2weeks each time with a service tech driving it home and around and nothing happens, i know electrical gremlins are hard to find and rectify and found myself in that firing line before, keep posting ideas please as a fresh mind is always handy.
                      cheers
