  • Safari snorkel (rattle)

    Hey all,

Have an interesting one for you, had the car serviced the other day, while talking to my mech about general guff I decided to pull the air filter box drain plug off (I think that's what it's called)
The plastic bung thing under the air box, anyway after I had pulled it off I noticed that the silicone that had been used to seal it up had perished, so decided to pull it out, with the intention of putting new silicone in. Now what surprised me and had me baffled for a few days is that my snorkel seemed to have developed a back pressure out of the ram head, it almost sounded like something was loose, now after pushing and pulling things, I couldn't for the life of me understand why it had suddenly developed this sound. Then the light bulb finally lit up in my head, so I quickly opened up the bonnet cuffed my Hand over this drain bung and walla the sound web away, I have since re sealed this bung with sensor safe silicone and went a bit nuts to ensure that it stays sealed, just thought I would let you guys know just incase you are having a similar issue, with a snorkel "rattle"

    Cheers

            Hi guys

That valve that you are talking about is a actually a one-way valve that drains water/dust out of the air-box but not let water in if kept clean. (Nearly mission impossible to get to if dual battery fitted).

If you block that off then the residual water/dust has nowhere to go and can not be dumped out of that valve!

Even worse if driving with a any snorkel as water still makes its way to the air-box but then drains out of that valve before entering the air-box.

Ive driven 9hrs in pouring rain and never had water in the air-box but i also clean that one-way valve regularly and i don't have any induction noise either.

When the air filter element is removed there is also 3 x small 2mm drain holes at the very bottom of the air box and i did seal those with silicone but not the on-way valve.

            Cheers

Mine never really sealed that well, yes is meant to be for getting rid of water debris etc, but swing as arb first sealed this up, I'm guessing they were also thinking that it could end up being a water ingress point

When I had the snorkel fitted to my 90 I was also shocked by the lack of silicone that should have been used to seal it up (also done by the so called professionals) I rang Safari them selves and asked about what to seal, he told me every single thing even putting a dab over what looked like pop rivets in part of the air canister. None of the joints were sealed and the hose that fell off under the inner guard was also not sealed, there so lucky that I heard a rattle and searched to see what it was, this is what I saw when I dropped the inner plastic guard
                  [IMG][/IMG]
This is what was holding it together
                  [IMG][/IMG]
This is how all the joins were
                  [IMG][/IMG]
So glad it was done properly NOT could have been a bloody nightmare had I not found this before we went away and dunked the front end a few times.......

Just goes to show how much crap is sucked in, this was just from going through some mud (not serious stuff) could imagine if this had been some deep water, glad to see they even thought about cleaning the joins (NOT) before they decided it didnt even need sealing up, WTF...... hence why I still havn't done the 120 yet. Will do myself when I get the chance like I ended up doing to the 90 totally striped it down and redid the lot including putting some paint over the holes they had to cut.............Not sure I trust any of them including a member on here who just about had his 150 stuffed by another so called professional mob here in Penrith.............

The guys who installed my Safari by default only caulked up the new snorkel hardware, but not the induction hoses in the engine bay. They were completely up-front about this, citing possible warranty issues as the reason for leaving that part alone. They offered to caulk everything if specifically requested.

Regarding the dust/water clearing port, the installer (proprietor) told me that in his own 4x4, he plugs up the port with silicone ahead of a trip, and pulls the plug out when back in town.

You might as well not have one unless its totally sealed. As far as water goes sitting in the air cannister, after I totally sealed everything I never had an issue with water collecting in the air cannister, I even totally sealed up the ducks beak at the bottom.Even a a huge storm and heaps of rain never had an issue with water in there. If just going through a river and all is going ok then generally there is no issues, its as we know when we get hung up on some thing and you lose the momentum thats when were in trouble. Petrol is still the lesser of the two engines people prefer when it comes to water but these days with all the electricals under the bonnet of either engine more care needs to be taken. When I had the old 2.8D hilux with snorkel on it I didnt give a thought about it cutting out (and it never did) and when the wife and I went away a few times it was well over the bonnet height lapping at the wipers but the old girl just chugged her way through. Not sure I would be that game these days especially with the 120 petrol my main concern is with the soverign bar acting like a water scoop (know problem with the 120 bar) and feeding water directly to the air intake, this is my main reason for fitting a snorkel to the petrol never had a snorkel on the one of the old 90 petrol I had and never had an issue with water induction, maybe a bit of luck went with it lol......Cheers Steve

Might just add incase people are confused I had 2 X 90 series prados, one diesel one petrol....................

                          Hi guys

I just got home now and removed the head off the snorkel and duck taped it with a rubber hand glove and started her up!........ The exploding noise off the rubber glove frightened the crap out of me.... It was in incredibly load! (Obviously i switched off the LPG before trying as it is activated by vacuum).

(Correction on the LPG!). It is activated by boost pressure only but switched it off any way

I then got a grace brothers plastic bag and duck taped that! It tried its damdest to suck that but instead sucked the one-way valve inside-out in instead then there was a load rushing sucking noise due to the vacuum that had built up.

I fitted my snorkel my self with the jubilee clips and extension hose etc that was provided with the safari kit and did not use any tape or silicone and can guarantee that mine is air tight

I only put silicone on the 3 x 2mm holes on the very bottom of the air-box from the inside but as saide before, I left the one-way valve alone.

Just shows that they are not being fitted properly because if they are fitted as the safari kit instructs it to be then it "Will" be air tight like mine.

                          Cheers

The 120 is different in the fact you have 2 rubber sleeves to join the outlet of snorkel to the inlet of aircleaner, compared to my 90 which had roughly 6 joins. The 120 virtually goes straight through the guard and joins straight up to the plastic sleeve inside the engine. The snorkel for the diesel and petrol is the same for the 120, so anyone finding one on ebay it will fit either. Im referring to safari, not sure on other brands... Cheers Steve

Yup! +1 on the 120 series safari kit Steve M

I wouldnt know about the other brands either but i did rectify a previously "pro installed" one on a 120 series D4D that wasnt even sealed and it was not a safari and i had to use plenty of silicone to seal it properly to the air box!

I will not name the brand or who fitted it so dont ask Lol..... (I sence that two people will be smirking when they read this).

The one i fitted to a hilux was a generic safari rip-off version and it was identical to the safara (Fittings as well) and fitted good but was not as snug fitting to the gaurd contour as a genuine safari but could not complain either as it was heaps cheaper and really good value for the money.

The snorkel dosent really need to withstand a high neg pressure (Like the kitchen rubber glove test..... 3 seconds max @ idle and anilolated) as there is a big opening at the top but you do feel better knowing that it can take the vacuum without the internals collapsing first. Especially the petrol model as they really suck when you load them up with the RPM.

I can't belive how many cow-boys are fitting snorkels with the laid back attitude?..... (Clearly a common problom with the pro idiots) Its as bizzare as pulling into a tyre shop and asking for new tyres and then them saying! "Would you like us to tighten the wheel nuts sir???" WTF!!

I am really having problems digesting there mentality?... Who goes snorkeling without a sealed mouth piece? Lol.

                              Cheers
