  • KZ-TE Intercooler Seal

I have noticed that the under-bonnet rubber seal that fits over the KZ-TE intercooler has warped at the bottom end. Air is now probably escaping through the subsequent gap between the seal and the intercooler.

Would this have a significant effect on performance and/or fuel consumption?

hi , mine does the same , couldnt fix it so i didnt bother. my two cents is that it gets plenty of air so it wouldnt affect it that much but who knows ?

Mine was warped too when I bought the Prado second hand. Bought a replacement in good condition from a wrecker and bought new plastic clips to install it. I made my own tool to remove the old clips as they are not very friendly to remove. Reckon the intercooler needs all the help it can get. Even considering putting on a bonnet scoop to get more air in. Seals are available from Toyota. From memory around $80 (I paid $50) Only real issue was the position of the seal. I had to sit in the engine bay to save breaking my back

I figured it best to replace the rubber seal. Toyota here now have this on order from Japan and I will install. Will keep you posted on performance thereafter. Arthur

Bad news. I replaced the seal and the new one has warped as bad as the old in only 2000km! I am convinced that it is critical looking at the amount of air that is punching past. I will just have to do some mods to hold it square and tight over the intercooler.

I cut a thin peice of ply, and put around the seal to hold it in place. has held it for a couple of years now. Keeps the seal shape and doesn't flop over the edges. Mine is a 95 series so maybe different to the 120. Very cheap fix that works.

            Cheers

I had a 1mm thick stainless steel plate lazer-cut into a frame to fit around the seal. Lined it with some duct tape so that the sharp edges do not cut into the rubber. So far - so good.
