  • DP Chip, Steinbower, etc and standard exhaust?

    Hi Guys and Gals.

There has been a few threads on putting in chips and exhausts to the diesel motors, has anyone just put in the chip without the exhaust?

Looking at a DP chip as the communication and service has been really good so far. I was looking at another brand but if retailers dont have the time to answer my questions prior to sale, they generally wont have the time afterwards either...

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

Hi. I have an '05 gx, bought it in sept. 09. I put a DP chip in afetr about 1 month and the difference was amazing. That was with a standard exhaust. I am now looking at mod'ing the exhaust (maybe).

    Cheers

Hi WSP, Good to hear you are pleased with the new DP chip but could you elaborate a bit more?

After the chip do you have more power and better fuel economy or just more power?

Most PPers would be interested in the results.

          Regards

Hi get heaps more power and grunt for towing the caravan. I dont care about economy when towing im more concerned with being able to maintain the speed limit. Dislike (hate is such a strong word) people who sit on 80-90 with a van in tow they just hold every body up. Im going away this weekend with van so will break out the i-phone app and work out some fuel figures

DP Chip, Steinbower, etc and standard exhaust?

Hi WSP, fair enough you only want power but the majority of grey nomads would prefer better fuel economy as well as extra grunt when needed and i agree with your comment about the slow vanners ( i am one) holding up traffic when travelling at 90-95 kph however out of respect for other motorists i have a camera rear mounted on my caravan with a monitor on my dash so that when i see traffic building up i then indicate left and allow them to pass when it is safe to do so of course.

I would be interested in your feedback regarding fuel usage and just for the record my D4D 120 series Prado fuel economy when towing my 2.2 tonne van at normal speed (90-95kph) returns 14.5 ltres per 100 and when i increase speed to 100-110 kph (to keep up with the traffic) fuel usage increases to around 18-19 litres per 100ks.

On my last trip (6000 ks) if i had travelled at the allowable speed limit say 100-110 kph my travel costs would have increased by roughly say 240 litres x $1.50 = $360.00 therefore i choose to travel at the reduced speed thus saving the money to spend other other vital vittles.

cheers and good luck with your trip

Hi there wsp, I dont see a problem with people towing at 80/90k ?? This is a comfortable cruising speed I find with van on the back, not sucking excess juice and Im not in a screaming hurry anyway when I go away. I keep a check on the mirrors all the time especially on single lane rds and if I find Im getting a few behind Ill move right over to the left so they can see better and pass when they feel its safe to do so. I never totally stop on the left in a lane of traffic as Ive learnt that if I do trying to do the right thing then every other a**hole is what I call them will cut me off when Im trying to merge back in the lane. I dont normally sit on 80 more like 90/95 which is generally only 5k below the limits on most outback roads. Cheers Steve PS by the way I use to drive semi's so I know how to drive long heavy loads...

Hi all I each to there own on towing i dont go over 100 as the boys in blue dislike it 80-90 is still 20-30 under the open road limit of 110 but on my way home came up behind one going 75 in a 100 zone had no idear we and others were there (no towing mirrors) in my mind that is rude and causes a mad rush when you come to a passing lane. Right back to the chip i will fill the car up tomorrow and let you know how it went but we have noticed both wife and myself that you dont have to push the throttle down as much to take off and you use less throttle when cruzing around this is only seat of the pants driving but it has to be doing something

Not sure WSP if you get the show called today/tonight on 7 here in Sydney or current affairs on 9 but they are having a segment on there tomorrow night I think, it is what we will be paying for fuel next year, by the sounds of it wont be cheap ?? I might have to look at going back to diesel again to gain the economy, I love the V6 big time but I just said to wife it would be either sell it after xmas or keep it and it will be worth jack if the price of fuel goes through the roof and over the $2 per litre. Over $2 a litre will cost $360 to fill both tanks but obviously been petrol will chew it up quicker then say your D4D. Running around town based on what I use and a diesel uses would be roughly an extra 6 or 7 Litres per 100 klm thats $14 extra for every 100k I do, starting to get out of my price range to run it. Would either go to a hilux sr5 d4d ute or a mitsi triton

Hi Steve I used to have a 2001 V6 Prado so i feel your pain it had heaps of grunt but hook a trailer or van behind it and the only thing you didnt pass was a petrol station I dont know if the Hilux runs a different tune to the Prado but the ones at work are slugs compaired to the prado (with out the DP Chip on) and they are the same year as mine

Yeah had a 3.4 V6 grande before and I know the 05 120 V6 I have now is a tad better on fuel. Wish the bloody current affairs would shut up about it, seems the servos think "well they expect it lets put it up" same as the aussie $$ was so high yet still paying $1.40 a litre where is this fuel watch guy, getting paid for doing nothing. Yes the hilux must be detuned they only have 343nm where as your prado is 410nm, and cant believe there updated/facelift model hilux is still a 4 speed auto and the NM's the same, think toyota need to lift there game, new BT50's nice and would leave toyota dead for power....... Might be jumping the fence and change over myself next time, BT50's nice and can get rear diff lock, even toyota still doesnt offer rear diff lock as an option ?? Cheers Steve
