  • Faulty Dash Lights - ABS, Brake, Battery

    Gents,

Here's my problem: Every so often when driving, my Battery light will flash. Not very often, but it has been going on for some time now. First thing I did was check the Belt which is tight and fine, second thing was to test the alternator and make sure it was fine and all seems to be normal.

After a while, I noticed the frequency increased whenever water would get into the engine bay (washing or 4WDing) which leads me to beleive the sensor might be getting a bit wet and faulty? I also replaced the Battery recently but this didnt remove the problem so it only really leaves me with either the alternator or the sensor. Anyone else have this issue?

Secondly... just to complicate the issue further; the last few weeks the Battery light problem has been increasingly bad. Gone from occuring every so often (noticing it flash maybe once or twice a week) to now flashing on almost every trip, and sometimes staying on for a prolonged period. Even worse though - now my ABS Light and Handbrake lights will also come on and stay on sometimes while driving. They will either flick themselves off after a few minutes, or I need to pull over, turn the car off and then turn it on again and they will generally go away.

When it was just the battery light I wasn't overly concerned... now however, it is a different story. Any suggestions? A mate has suggested I get underneath and unplug any and all sensors/wires and give them a squirt with Lectra Clean to see if this helps. Anything else? I know enough about the mechanical side to get by... but electrics are another story all together!

Is there a single sensor that might be messing with this? The ECU screwed up? Any advice would be great. Thanks gents

The more I think about it, I may be looking at low voltage on my alternator... Maybe I need to test it again and look a little harder :P

It sounds like it may be worth dropping in to a Toyota dealer and ask if they can check for fault codes.
That might at least give you an idea what youre up against?
      Good luck.

Thanks Coolbanana... I shall put that on my to do list.

Was trying to avoid it if possible, since the town I have recently moved too doesnt have a Toyota Dealer.. nearest is about 3-4hrs away. All good though. Worth the trip I think!!

Leaning towards just ordering a new alternator for it since Im pretty positive thats the problem. Thanks for the advice champ!

Sounds like a possibly loose ground. Check to see if all grounding points are secured down properly in the engine bay. Also make sure battery terminals are tightened properly.

i'd put my money on the alternator, had similar issue on another car and it ended up being the alternator.

            check the battery's charge rates

Just furthermore to this - has anyone upgraded the Alternator from the 80 amp to anything larger? Is it necessary if was running say... 6 HID's?

HIDs typically use less power than your normal light bulbs

Yeh, I know they draw less... just wanted to be sure that the Alternator would be up to it. Like I said .. Im not exactly clued up on the electric's side of things.

New Alternator has been ordered and should be here in the next couple... Should be able to fit it over the weekend hopeully!

                  Thanks for the help gentlemen!

Just out of interest how big is the new alternator? (power output). As far as i know there are places that can put extra windings (spell?) on the existing alternator to increase the output

id be interested in your outcome... my lights came on similar and now i have flat batteries and the alternator isnt charging... just got back from a big trip with water crossings too... if your rebuilding your alt, should u go bigger?

I believe toyota have 3 difference sizes of alternator available for the prado, and installation of them (as standard) depends entirely on where the care is being sold. These are all genuine toyota, unsure if there are aftermarket alternators that suit, given that they are voltage regulated via the ECU.

                        Sizes are: 12Vdc @ 80A, 12Vdc @ 100A, and 12Vdc @ 120A.

I believe a google search will locate the 80A ones by part number - i think I located the others on the ToyoDIY site?

Not convinced that your isses is with the alternator either, more likely a bad connection if it is an intermittant fault.

Check the charging voltage, a failing alternator will sometimes just output enough to turn the Alternator tell tail off, but only be putting out a low charge rate ie a few amps. As a result the battery will slowly discharge and equipment like the ABS that requires hefty
current to operate won't like the low voltage and hence the warning tell tails.

Turning on a couple of high current devices ie air, rear screen heater and lights should prove the point.

                          Cheers

I checked both batteries with a multimeter. They both are reading around 10 volts. I then ran the engine and the voltage didnt go up at all. I then ran my solar panel on the battery for an hour and one is back up around 12 volts and 11 volts on the other.

So im assuming because the voltage didnt jump up it means the alternator isnt charging. Can it be any wiring or fuses etc or just time for a new alternator?

Could be one of the fuses, can't remember which one though - IGN1 or IGN2 maybe?
