  • Which chip??

    Hi All,

SORRY FOR THE LONG POST IN ADVANCE!!!!
I'm new to this and being a new member I hope im not starting an old thread or
A War Of the Chip's, or A War of the Manufacture etc...
I am trying to find a little more performance out of our 2009 KDJ150 series Prado Kakadu 3.0L T/D Auto and its hard to find people's opinion's + trouble's in the one thread in regards to diesel performance chip's, type's, brand's and if any updates/changes to module were avalible scince they have installed and most importantly extremely happy with from day dot and had no drama's with.

Im guessing it to be more a Popularity count on who has what brand, why, and how they made their mind up, (Please direct me if there is!!) rather than the chip manufactures or dyno tuners saying mines bigger, better or does it this way than yours does and I'm right and you're wrong. I guess it would be nice to hear from dyno tuners too on what they like and dislike and found easy to tune and make reliable & usable gains from and also people who found a good tuner in there area...

I dont want to know how it works, or what ticks when, OR the manufacture trying to big note there product. I would rather know what people find works well and are happy with and who they used to tuned it to perfection.
(I would have become a diesel tech & completed a Coarse if it interested me that much to know thoery and technical bulls#$t, thats why I am paying the dollars!)

If the issues/ problems had, out-way the frustrations???

But all aside I'm having great difficulty in deciding on one!!!

There are so many on the market and each having there goods & bads it is hard to decied on one. When approaching different people in the area and asking what they think and recommend its all over the shop with no straight answer or decision helping made and getting a bit of a feeling they are one sided. (maybe getting better dealer prices from one brand to another)

I just want something that will work first time its installed and not a bitch to tune, play up, cause fault codes, limp mode/shut-down/de-rate the engine, make it run rough or cause it to rattle like a jar of marbles & Months after its been tuned will need retuning because its a prick of a thing or performance is lacking.

So its simple, I'm looking for a brand that works and does what it's been designed to do and make more reliable and usable power.

I will be doing an exhaust upgrade soon to help with the power gain.
Muffler or Full Sys. not sure on yet either, help on that would be great too...
Its also used for towing and is auto so I don't want any drowning or door rattling system.

So I hope at the end of this we have some decent and honest opinions without the technical breakdown that will help me and others in this scenaro on the right path in the chip department!!!

    Thanks and Regards
    MATT.

Hey Matt, I know exactly how your feeling at the moment! Every Chip company states that their product is the best, gets the most power, uses the least fuel. has the most advanced chip on the market ETC ETC?.. I will be watching very closely to this thread as I have the same Vehicle. Good luck

I can't talk for a 150series, but our 120 has seen 2x different chips in it's time and I have fitted others to numerous vehicles.. Both increased performance, as they should do, but what I have found (being a mechanic) is that MOST chips only really control the amount of fuel given and don't really rely on very much information to get the utmost out of your vehicle.

I'm of the opinion that every vehicle is different and most people have performed a modification of some sort somewhere along the line which changes the characteristics of their vehicle mainly in a small way but however it is still a change. If you purchase an 'off the shelf one size fits all product' then how do you know that it is giving you the most benefit for your money?

My advice would be to check out the products on the market that look at certain operating parameters of your vehicle and that can be altered to suit individual needs. Such as our 120 which has a 3" exhaust, runs an EGT, we want to tow with it, has a Uni Filter installed etc etc... and we would like more power/torque but we would also like to see the best fuel economy at the same time (I'm sure most want this)... So we chose a chip that can cover off on all of these requests and can be individually tuned to accomodate our needs. The tunes are programmed on the dyno and then stored for us for future use if our needs change. Such as hitting the beach and wanting power over economy.

This is not just a chip that offers a little switch or jumper wire to change the state of tune to suit a stock vehicle with no mods. This is a chip that has been tuned for specific conditions for a specific vehicle utilising a dyno.

In my opinion this is a much better idea. It also has fails safes built in by utilising the EGT to help protect the engine if temps were to get up...

I know that there are good and bad reports out there on all chips and each manufacturer claims to be the best but hopefully this helps a bit...

Mitch, you didn't name your chip. For the record it is the same as mine. Its a CHIP IT chip.

Referring back to the original post, well I have had a minor issue. I repeat, very minor! If you think you can modify an engine with an aftermarket product and have it 100% hassle fee, then please don't chip with any chip. My research told me I can get a great result or a good result. I am very happy with my Chip It chip.

I note that Chip It did have some teething problems with the 150's, but that has to the best of my knowledge been fixed and the issue was with some of them only. If your interested after considering all the responses in this thread then head to the discount thread to take advantage.

        Good luck in your endeavors.

And for good reason MLC... There are not very many chips that offer the features that I have mentioned. I'm sure Matt will do his research and find out for himself that a plug and play is OK but a fully programmable system is the WAY TO GO! If Matt is looking for the pro's and con's and wants advice on what to look for then he will definately be taking a long hard look at the Chip It. I gather he isn't looking at this thread being a Brand V Brand thread but more of an advice thread on what he should be looking for??

I agree 100% its not a best brand thing that I am after but as from what I can see and hear is that the two that stand out are Steinbauer and Chip-It. To be honest I think I will go for one of these two brands but the hardest part is when you speak to people & tech/tuners on which one I should go for, they are both level in the point scoring department. One tells you Chip-it and the other Steinbauer. But all I want out of the Chip is to work, not play up, be custom tuned and make a noticable increase in power. My 2009 Holden VE SSV that I bought brand new had work done to it by myself and had it tuned the first time and it ran good for a while then I took it to another tuner, he turned it into a rocket.(330RWK) . Shame the prado doesnt have that...
Here is something your going to find funny.... I have two tuners that I have in mind that I am trying to decide on which to use and when I spoke to them for the first time one said Steinbauer and the then changed his mind when I said what about Chip-it. The other said Steinbauer with a passion. I spoke to Chip-it and asked for a tuner they could recommend (not telling). So I gave them a call (which was one of the tuners I am considering) and he said Steinbauer (his first choice).
So you can see now what im up against.

You can always run both. At the same time.

Now that's even more confusing. How would that work and wouldn't they clash? What would be the benefit of running two different brands of chip's? Don't they do same things?
Also does Steinbauer have EGT? And would I need different dump pipe to suit?

Barry is just having a lend...

The EGT is not absolutley necessary... However it is a safe guard against overtemps from running more power/more boost etc and will protect your engine by automatically dropping the tune to a lower spec/factory tune. This was the was the selling tool for me. Plus, we (in WA) have dedicated support from the manufacturer so that helps alot... Having the experts that design and built the thing fit it and tune was another win win for me.

One more thing.... I was also happy to be supporting an Aussie product...

If you do wish to run the EGT, then yes... You will need to change your Dump Pipe... There are a couple of suppliers out there that manufacture a direct replacement of the cast pipe to suit a stock exhaust, but you would be better off spending the money and fitting a full 3" system as that alone will provide a significant kick in the bum for your Prado...

We previously ran a Safari D-Tronic which was fine and offered a little more power and torque... No complaints with it. Simple to install being a plug and play, but there was no flexibility in it at all... Couldn't change the tune etc, etc...

We now have the Chip It module with all the fruit... including EGT and full 3" exhaust etc... I seriously could not believe the difference in performance over the old chip. The flexibility is there as we have several tunes to choose from if we wish.. Best of all, they were all created to suit our car and our mods on the dyno.. We have since dropped the tune to a more fuel efficient tune but it still has a crap load more grunt than with the Safari...

So far so good. Very happy. We are heading off on a month long driving holiday with the Camper on Thursday morn, so the prrof will be in the pudding so to speak!

But do your research and get what suits you..

I'm a mechanic by trade and like to play and I have an interest in how it all works, so the Chip It was the chip for me...

I have recently been in some quite remote areas. Reliability and confidence in your accessories is paramount. Last thing you want in this situation is for your ECU to throw up a code when you're out the back of beyond. Fingers crossed, my Steinbauer has so far been trouble free.

Nearly bought a Chip, but this is the main reason that I've held off. Hopefully chip-it are now sorted.

I fitted my "Chip It" today, also put the EGR block of plate on. VERY VERY happy. Just running the factory set tune 4. No problems with codes, I paid the few dollars extra and bought a scan guage also, not that I think I will even need it for the chip it.
