  • Warming up engine

Just wondering people's thoughts on warming up diesel engines before driving them?

I have a 1KD in my 08 VX prado and a 1kzn in my 98 hilux surf and always run yhe engines for 2 to 3 min before I drive away (unless I'm in a rush). Is this good practice or a waste of time and diesel?

    Any thoughts appreciated

My 2c is its a waste of time. They take forever to warm up when stationary anyway. Just drive it gently till she warms.

I always turn equipment and let it run for 30-60-90 seconds before i start driving, and then don't give it a boot full untill at operating temp. with tractors we sometimes let them warm up to operating temperature while stationary.

Being an SOHC (in the case of the KZ or DOHC for the KD) I'd be inclined to give it 20-30 seconds to let the oil get flowing in the cylinder head before giving it anything and then driving gently till the temp needle starts to move.

Takes me five minutes to get out of my driveway on to the busy road anyway.

              The Prado isn't a tractor. I think you'd be referring to a Jeep. Now that's a tractor.

no its not, the prado's got a long way to go until its up to the standards of John Deere in terms of diesel technology and comfort :P
