  • D4D - Engine Relative Compression Test

    I have just had some 'relative compression' testing done on the D4D (done by RACQ) and the results don't really make sense - unless of course there is an underlying issue.

    Being a relative test, it assumes that even the reference cylinder is ok, results are:

    Cylinder 1 = 100%
    Cylinder 2 = 92%
    Cylinder 3 = 85%
    Cylinder 4 = 80%

    I guess the concern I have is that there is a steady drop in the level of compression, which equates to about a 20% difference between cylinders 1 & 4. This seems excessive to me - does this indicate the potential for an underlying issue??

    Basic vehicle details are:
    2007 GXL
    69,000km
    About 12L/100km

    Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

    Perhaps the crank shaft bearings at the back of the engine have excessive play. Which kind of makes sense since they would be subjected to more torsional loads on that end of the engine since that where the drivetrain attaches.

      I reckon my relatives would fail too, especially those from the last marraige ;p

      I am interested as to why you felt the need to do this test and what acceptable ranges are.

        The relative compression testing was part of a suite of tests undertaken at time of purchase (recently). Whilst the tester noted that this range of variance was ok - i am looking further into why this difference may exist AND what a healthy variance would be.
