  • light racing upper arms, 285,70 17's

having some probs, 285's may be a bit too big.

i have 2 inch lift, obviously having problems, with the wheels fowling on the body (have flattened seems),

my next plan is to run the lightracing upper arms a 1 inch diff drop and a 1 inch stut assembly spacer.

now obviously even though it will be just under a 3 inch inch lift, so on up travel the tyres will still fowl, now my hope is that in the extra adjustment wheel allignment acheived from the upper control arms and the slightly limited up travel by running a spacer rather than a coil over or a longer spring that the extra clearance needed may be achieved.

    Thoughts ??

either that or i might have to get smaller tyres.

Is a body lift out of the question? Do you have air bags?

        Where is it rubbing?

I haven't gone to the lengths of replacing the upper arm yet, so I don't know..

Some thoughts on the tyres/rims however; perhaps a 255/85R16 would rub less? What offset are the rims? Perhaps more or less offset will help.

I have 17*9's with negative 25 offset I think it is, it works out that the inside of the rim sits where the standard wheel sits and the outside is pretty much lined up with my flare, thing is buying arms and stuff is cheaper than new tires our wheels, I'm keen to modify the body too just need to see what people have done. I need it ready for the gtg

Well I guess it's obvious now that not many people have done this...

You didn't say where's it's rubbing. I'm thinking a -25 offset is pretty huge, so the outer edge of the front tyres would be making contact on the front/rear edges of the flares.

Not much info around wheel arch mods for Prados, and certainly no aftermarket ones (so good luck!). I've considered an option may be cutting back the plastic arch and running flat rubber all the way around, ending as a mud flap, similiar to this: http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/496569-post15.html

it's not actually the flare thats the problem, it's the body that i am worried about when the wheel is turned, ive not had the tyres rub/hit on the flares, i have cut the bottoms of them back above where the mud flap used to mount slightly but nothing major. Because i have HD springs and run my front sway bar i don't think i am going to go anywhere near the wheel arch (flare) in any other places other than the rear of it but then i havn't had alot of experience giving it a hard time offroad...

to varify what i mean, the wheel clears fine when not turned, and it fowls on the body behind the front tyre when wheel is turned and suspension is compressed.

just reading taresk's build on 4wd motnhly, he had 2.5 inch lift, ground back body seams, aftermarket upper arms and same offset and tyre size as me and had no rubbing, so upper arms are the key...

! they have to be, he had total caos, i can't see why the toytec ones won't offer the same advantage

Don't hold your breath for a reply, I believe Taresk sold his Prado.

How's it going with this Spamwell? It could just be that you need the caster put forward.

As for arms, my choices are the Total Chaos or Camburg.
All-Pro seems to be second rate.
Light Racing is another good option with the sealed ball joint, but less articulation.

If you want some pointers for suppliers, PM me.

yeah i ended up deciding on the total chaos arms, then i finally got a message back from taresk saying that the arms made no difference for clearance.. so i decided i was going to try to mod the firewall more because i got a wheel allignment which still made no difference. I think 285/70r17's are that little bit bigger then 285/65r16's and they are heaps harder to fit.

and well then i got defected for my tires so now i have just bought a new set of legal sized maxxis at's and my 285's are up for sale GUTTED ! i could not find any aggresive at's or any muds in the size i needed in stock in the country and i couldn't wait for the back orders because i had a couple weeks to fix my defect

Oh crap! What a shame your so far away - I have originals lying around (and I could use some 285's for testing clearances).

So why not keep the 285's for play?

I'm not surprised the arms wouldn't help for clearance, if anything, they would make it worse as they allow more articulation.
