  • Info on Lovell's/Bilstein 2" suspension lift

    Hi all,
Apologies if this has been posted before but I thought it might be useful to someone in the future. I'm prepping to purchase a 2" suspension lift kit for my 90 series 3.0l diesel auto. I've been chatting to the guys on another forum and they've highly recommended the Lovell's/Bilstein setup so I started to do some online googling for some prices.

I was struggling to find the correct part numbers for comparison. Here's what I've found out from some very helpful service staff...

The Bilstein shock part numbers listed in the global supplier catalogues for the 90 series Prado are:

    BE5-2778 (front)
    BE5-2741 (rear)

These numbers are listed for the Prado 90 in Germany, NZ for example. You can source these shocks in the US for around $380 US + shipping (!). That is for all four.

However, Bilstein Australia have done some work on these shocks. The very clever men (probably with beards and clipboards ) have tweeked them, revalved them and done other good things to these shocks specifically for this vehicle. They have re listed them as:

    Front: BE5 2450M
the “M” in this case denotes an alteration on the original part number. The alteration is simply a rate change, making the front shock firmer.

    Rear: BE5 2451
They (Bilstein Aus) also had a M spec, made firmer.

Furthermore, they then decided a longer travel unit was needed in Australia, so a 1004LT rear was commissioned.
(info with thanks from Bilstein Aus)

So that's why we end up with places like 4WDdirect in Oz listing the kits which include the part numbers:

    "Front: BE5-2450M and
    Rear: B46-1004LT"

    The springs are another story...Phew!

The price of the latter is $$$ comparatively but I dont mind that if I'm paying for the extra shock rework and IP involved in the tweeking by people such as Bilstein Aus or 4WDDirect.

I'll keep looking but I think I'll be saving up & ordering a kit already setup from somewhere in Ozzie. Hope this helps...

Hey Rossy, thanks for replying. Yes, 4WDdirect are looking favourites at the moment...I've emailed them for some questions on their kit set, whether I should go heavy or medium duty springs etc.

My current set up is knackered, they are the original though! I have an alloy bar on the front, dual batteries and a wooden ply drawer(s) in the rear. I'm 725mm on rear and 730mm on front (should be 740mm right?) It's my 60% road, 40% off road 'toy'.

Hi Raydes - do you know of these guys do the Bilsteins that have been "tweeked" for the Prado like the ones at 4wddirect please? i.e the 1004LT etc (as per above). I'll contact them if not to ask...would be worth getting a comparison on price. Cheers for your help.

Hi guys, I was booked in a fortnight or so ago to get the Bilstein/Lovells medium all round kit installed on our Prado. However, the shop rang and said they're not able to get Lovell springs at the moment (short stock from their supplier) .... i'm wondering if I hold on and wait for the Lovells to come and still go with them, or do I change and go for the OME? We're not in a huge hurry, but would like the upgrade done within the next 2 months...
Has anyone else had an issue lately with a shortage of Lovells?
                  Thanks for your input.

                    Hey St3veC,
Last Thursday i put in Bilsteins with King Springs KTFR-58 and KTRR-59 (medium raised). Saturday we drove up the Stuart Highway and then turned into the APY Lands. So far with about 1200k's travelled i am extremely happy with that combination. IMO it is the shocks that are the most important aspect and the springs are support. Definately a bit of lift and very comfortable over the corrugations and washouts. So there is another option for you
Our 6 year old and 3 year old try their hardest to make sure there is no time or money for the other baby

Yeah, thanks for that suggestion. Actually this was something that the shop offered me to do, but at first I wasn't sure of the Kings reputation etc compared to the Lovells, especially being matched up well to the Bilstein shockies. But from what you have just said, and what I have been able to read over these last few days, it seems that the kings aren't all that bad after all.

Do the kings offer the same lift height as the Lovells? What is the lift height that the 'raised' king springs give, do you know?

I think the medium kings will be the option I will go with after all.

(by the way letsgoplaces, we too have a 4 and 1 yr old...) how did you find the littlies travelled for extended periods of time?

Mate to start with the kids travelled really well. The 4yo travelled alot in her first two years of life and it was the 1yo's first big trip. We had a couple of dvd sreens that hang on the headrest (lifesaver... theirs or ours, not really sure ) Started the day at 6:30, stopped in Pt Augusta for 45 mins for breakfast, then 30 mins at Glendambo for a run-a-round and an hour at Coober Pedy for dinner at 5 and arrived in the community at 10pm. A big day but we were really happy with how they travelled. We have driven that route too many times for it to be a sightseeing cruise and just wanted to reach our destination
I have no idea about the differences in lift between the two brands. It has risen a bit, not sure how much cause the days leading up to the change over i was too busy to take photo's and get pre lift measurements (kicking myself). I will get the measurements for you tomorrow. I wasn't specifically after much lift, really wanted to improve the comfort of the ride. It did what i wanted

                            Hey St3veC,
                            My post lift dimensions are
                            FL 750mm
                            FR 760mm
                            RL 790mm
                            RR 790mm
So no huge lift by any stretch of the imagination, but it does ride nice for me now
