  • Running rough after snorkel put on

Hi All - I have just installed a snorkel on my 11/08 D4D and have noticed a large vibration when just accelerating until about 2200RPM. I was wondering if I need to take it Toyota to get the ECU reprogrammed or does the computer take awhile automatically to re-adjust to the higher air flow due to the snorkel?
    Cheers, Ben

    Hi,

The ECU does not need to be adjusted, should run fine after snorkel is fitted. I
would be checking to make sure you have not somehow restricted the air
flow somehow. I would also be checking any electrical connectors you may have removed,
and for any possible airleaks after the airflow meter.

    Cheers

The ECU will "re-learn" after a couple of corners on the first drive after start up, assuming you disconnected the battery to fit the snorkel (some dual battery setups will require the aux battery to be removed to facilitate airbox removal). There's no extra air flow from installing the snorkel. Air induction is governed by engine capacity, and the size of the inlet ports/throttle body. I'd be looking for an air leak between air meter and inlet into the engine or something blocking the snorkel tube, plastic wrap or similar.

what type of sealant did you use? as normal silicone will affect the airflow sensors. I'm not sure what its called but the sensor safe sealant is available at most auto part shops

Hi Guys - Thanks for that info. - Yes we installed it ourselves and we used sikaflex for the sealing. No I didn't disconnect the battery...should I of?? I was thinking of sending it to Toyota to retune the ECU but from LeighW's response, I guess this is not required. It only vibrates at very low revs when accelerating and then goes away at higher revs.
It is very strange to me!! You help is and has been really appreciated!! I come from having a Nissan Pathfinder which I did almost everything to but I did not have this issue when I put a snorkel on.... Cheers, Ben!!

Check that the snorkel head is on tight. Every now and then mine comes loose and vibrates as you describe.

Did you make sure the snorkel was not rubbing on any part of the guard ?? If touching on the guard this will cause a resonating sound.. Other then the snorkel touching the body not sure what ould be casuing it to be making the noise. Will be interesting to find out how you go and find the problem as I am about to install one on my 120. Regards Steve

My snorkel did the same about 1000k after being fitted - the bolts that held the body on weren't tight and were vibrating against the guard.Might pay to check your nuts.Hope this helps.

I took the beast to Toyota and the technician took it for a drive with me and he said that everything was normal and that the D4D has a 'harmonic' in the engine around the 1500rpm mark and then it goes away which was 'normal'. He advsd me that Toyota was aware of this but it was not damaging to the motor in any way as this was my main concern.
                    Cheers, Ben!!
