  • Easy Ignition Power On Access in the Engine Bay

What the easiest and most convenient place to tap into "ignition on power" to trigger a relay?
Im fitting up the Thumper charging kit and it says the most convenient point is the wiper motor
Maybe not so on a Prado!

Most people seem to use the wiper motor for accessory power.

There probably are other sources, I have picked up access and ignition
under the dash. I'll have a look at the schematics on the weekend if
no one else replies and see what I can find under the bonnet.

Can you post your vechiles model?

    Cheers

      Hi Leigh
      2003 Grande V6.
The wiper motor is behind the firewall in the trough so not so convenient.
Theres plenty in the dash but Im looking for a spot specifically in the engine bay.
      Cheers

We found a spare plug in the main fuse box under the bonnet, marked IG. Works on ignition on only. Ours is a deisel so may be different on petrol. We found this using a voltmeter and turn ignition on off until power was found.

        Good luck.

Rusty, maaaaaaate, thats excellent, just checked and that will work a treat!
Mines petrol but its the same.
I will definitely use that, makes life easy.

Ive wired up the thumper charging system using the trigger point for the relay that Rusty mentioned.
            Works great.
The only problem is, if you turn the ignition on, the two batteries connect and the secondary battery can drain the cranking battery if the motor isnt running.

Is there another point to use that only switches when the engine is running?

Does the Prado have any VSR's (voltage sensitve relays) that activate circuits only when voltage is higher or charging or engine running?

Or is there a low power VSR that anybody knows of that I can use to trigger the existing switching relay.

I know on the Grande for example, the air suspension adjustment only works when the motor is running.
Wouldnt know where to tap into it though or if its appropriate.

Very useful thread this mate, I was looking for a source of power switched by the ignition myself - now I know

Thats the one i used, but i put a inline fuse before the wire exits the fusebox - just in case. Using it to power the large relay for the second battery and to isolate second power wire for the trailer.

                    Source of ignition switched power

Before I get into modding the Prado too much, I want to set it up properly so that add-ons are done right.

My FIL's troopie has a small box near the battery that has three terminals, power, ignition and cant remember the last. Its there for powering additional devices and is a great source - especially for the ignition switched power.

So this got me thinking, I should put a terminal block under the bonnet that is supplied by power switched by the ignition switch. My problem is I am not sure where I can get the switched power from. Minimum requirement is enough power to run a relay that supplies the dist. block.

Does anyone know the best place to get the ignition switched power from?

I'll probably do the same thing for spot/led lights

                    Mick

Thank you kindly - did not find it in my search. My need is running at 120k at the moment so somethings dont load properly and I obviously missed it by not waiting for it to load properly

the other way you could go is to tap into the m terminal output from the alternator. Use that to power up a relay, that way stuff thats drawing power will only be running when the engine is running if you want to go that way.

I have diagrams here if you want, just let me know what engine you have and can give you the correct one.

                          Cheers Joel

Sorry to dig up an old thread.

Is it possible to get to the underneath of the fusebox and run the cables up that way. If so, what sort of lug will fit into the fusebox so that a normal blade fuse can be used. i.e. where can we find the connectors that fit the fuse box.

                              Threads now merged.

Not sure how hard it is to get to the fuse box wiring from underneath. Might be easier to use an inline fuse and use the IGN 'signal' to trigger a relay to power up your items of substantial current.
