  • My dual battery issue

I have a dual battery set up with a strange issue that I can't solve.

The isolator constanty cuts in and out when driving.

If the car has been sitting for a while and I go for a short or long drive it works fine. Its only once I have been driving for sometime then stop for a short period and go again that the isolator starts cutting in and out. I've even had the same issue with the battery charger. I accidently bumped one of the clips of the battery terminals, when I put the clip back on the isolator started cutting in and out about every 20secs.

When this is happening I have tested the Voltage at the isolator and it is jumping between 13.5 and 12.5, so the islolator is just doing as it was designed to do, I just don't know why the voltage is jumping around. Everything seems to work fine until the battery(cranking)has been under a decent charge then stopped and started again.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I would start by pulling all the terminals off and giving them a clean to make sure you have good contacts, I have seen dirty connections on dual battey isolators cause a few strange problems including one much like you are describing, cheap easy place to start even if it doesn't solve the problem.

Is one of the batteries on the way out?

I was thinking along the same lines as MidLifeCrisis, and from your description, I'm suspicious of the aux.

Thugh the first thing to try is disconnecting all the load from your aux. Do this by pulling load fuses at the aux battery, not just switching the loads off.

If no change... Do you see the voltage fluctuations with the aux disconnected?

Best to eliminate one thing at a time.

As suggested, disconnect the wiring for the isolator.

Run vehicle as before and check the cranking battery voltage to see
if your still getting the same voltage fluctuations. If so then the Alternator,or
          voltage regulator are prime suspects.

If you have an alternator voltage booster fitted try replace it with a fuse and
see if this makes any difference.

If this tests ok, try connecting the main to the aux with a jumper cable and again
test. If still ok then the problems going to be in the wiring to the isolator.

          Cheers

Id start at the aux battery, if its faulty then it will pull to main down every time the isolator connects and cause issues like your seeing.

I have the same problem...if i have to many things draining battery,,ie headlights, wipers on, braking & indicating at an intersection etc., the isolater kicks in..
Batteries (OE starter & century marine aux)are 4.5 years old now and I'm sure they are on their way out....or dirty connections

                Matty

Dave's rig and its battery/isolator issue sounded similar. I was guessing the aux battery is about to go to a rig in the sky......

                  Thanks for the replies.

I am think both batteries are good as they both hold a charge when the car is not driven for a few days and I have tested both with my battery charger. also the voltage jump is only found at the isolator (main and aux test fine when its happening). This cutting in and out happens with the car off so I am thinking is not the alternator. Please feel free to poke holes in my reasoning. Must be somewhere in my dodgey wiring from main to isolator. I have used very thick cable between the main, isolator and aux, but the earth is a small cable could this be an issue?

Hi I recently installed a dual battery kit in my Prado as well, I used a VSR and in the instructions it mentioned if the batteries are incorrectly sized for the charging system you will get what they termed "Battery chatter" as you say cutting in and out constantly. I added a battery of the same rating as the OEM and I have had no problems.

MAte i installed two MRV70's about a year ago. All sweet. Got a few nights out of the auxillary with fridge, lights and other small miscellaneous loads etc. On a longer trip to fraser earlier in the year was waking up in the morning after full day driving to find the voltage almost in the red (national luna monitor (unsure exact voltage)).This happened most mornings. Have always charged with Ctek charger. Upon getting home found after charging both batteries, if the car was left idle for a day, voltage would drop on both batteries. Found main battery +ve terminal sulphated so replaced and cleaned up all terminals and connections. Then found loose connection on isolator.. Tightened. Thought u beauty. Charged both batteries. A day later started to drop again. Both of them. Any ideas??

I wouldn't use Allrounders in a D4D, being calcium you can't get enough V out of the alternator to charge them properly.
