  • Algae in fuel tank?

Got the 120 (D4D) at Toyota because it had lost power and using heaps of juice so after hearing all the stories i had them check the injectors, especially since it had just started missing on idle very occasionaly.
Turns out that no 3 injector is out of spec, and the supply pump "cant keep up" especially up hills.
Toyota are telling me the most likely culprit is algae in the fuel tank? Anyone heard of this before?

    Cheers John

This does happen and can be difficult to get rid of. You will need to get Toyota to clean out the fuel system.
Then there is an addative that needs to be added to your fuel. Even after cleaning your tank throughly it can still come back. I would continue using the additive for several months. And Definatly don't get any fuel from the place you got the contaminated fuel. Took us five months to get a machine at work clean and several thousands of litres of diesel. Probably wouldn't hurt to give diesel injection specialist a call for some advice.

My D4D has also been struck down with algae. Local Toyota dealership have advised that I have a dead fuel pump, with the damage caused by the contamination. Repair cost - $12K. Yes - thats twelve thousand dollars. A dozen gorillas. Lucky I'm with AAMI....

How does your insurance company come into this? I thought AAMI just covered accident damage.

Please explain.... I am up for insurance renewal very soon.

Comprehensive cover - not just accidents, fire or theft. When lodging my claim I was told that they cover brainfades such as putting petrol in the diesel tank, so me having algae (ie not my fault in any way) would be a cinch.

I like the idea of brain fade coverage.

One of my associates just picked up a load of what he thought was water contaminated fuel from Carnarvon. Lost power and the yellow warning light came on. Took it to dealer in Carnarvon who at first weren't sure of what to do. They replace the main filter under the bonnet and sent him on his way. 3 minutes later the car died again. He went back and they replaced both filters. He got going and headed to Geraldton where the car stopped again. This time the Geraldton dealer identified that the problem was the pickups in the tanks were blocked with algae. $1800 and he's mobile again. His problem is that he lives in a remote place (Warakurna) where his car sits for weeks, even months on end not being driven and hence the algae will grow.

Can happen in storage tanks, especially if moisture in tank and warm weather, a large fuel depot near me 20yrs ago had a big problem with it, they had numerous claims against them for damage to trucks using their diesel. Alot of additives will kill the algae, I've been told Wynns EDT http://www.wynns.co.nz/wynns-product...=3&s=27&id=126 actually have 12 different fungicides that they rotated in different batches so the algae doesn't become resistant (apparently this was a problem years ago).
