  • Intermittent engine miss

Had a phone call from a mate who's D4D Prado 150 is suffering an intermittent "miss" or slight hesitation whilst travelling at highway speeds. He's been travelling around outback SA and is on his way back across the Nullabor to WA.

The car has done less than 10,000km. Any thoughts on what might cause this?

Surprised that I didn't get any responses, anyway he found/solved the problem so I thought I'd share the solution for anyone else who comes across this.

After driving a bit further he stopped and followed the procedure for clearing the water trap (printed on the passenger side sun visor). After that the problem went away. He stopped at the next Toyota dealer, who found no fault codes. Seems that it is possible to get moisture in the fuel filter without triggering the alarm.

He has made it back across the Nullabor with no further problems.

      Hi krypto,

I would suggest he installs a Raycor 230R fuel filter in addition to the OEM unit.

The Racor can also be fitted with a water alarm and the filter element won't
let any water through. The car will eventually stop if enough water is present
to clog the filter, still better than damaging the common rail system.

      Cheers

I Looked into this previously. It seems that what the Prado needs is not more filtering of fuel, as it is possible to remove lubricants in the fuel, but an additional and more efficient water trap.

There are a number of manufacturers that make specialist water traps.

Loooked extensively at this too, trouble with the water traps is they all say
stop large droplets of water, my concern is that the water will be well atomised
in the diesel by the fuel pump and small particules will get through. My concern
with the common rail on the prado is to stop rust, this is why I decided on the
Racor instead of a sedimentor alone. Also a sedimentor will not stop the water
once the bowl is full it will be passed through so unless there is a very small amount
of water in the fuel or your very quick to kill the motor then water will get through.

The Racor has the usual sediment type trap bowl, it also use a water repellent filter
membrane that is will stop 99.5% of water. I have selected a 10 micron filter, the
Toyota filter I believe is around 5 micron so the Racor shouldn't stop anything going
          thru that the Toyota wouldn't.

From what I have read Toyota in some markets have authorised the use of this
          setup.

          Cheers
