  • Yet a further battery question

    Hi all,

I have the 2nd tray and the dual battery system is on the way.

My question is what battery out of the following options:

    Deka 9A34M (55ah, 850 cca). $276 + postage.

    Optima D27M (66ah, 800 cca). $399 + postage.

    Optima 34M (50ah, 800 cca). $275 inc postage.

The battery will not be my cranking battery and will mainly run spotlights, 2 amps, UHF, ERP and winch. May also run a fridge.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Chris

I've got the D27M as my one and only battery.... I have heard good things about the Deka battery also (Seamate was one that I was considering and some Batt World sites currently have these on special.)

Yeah I looked at the Seamate ones but I think they might be slightly too big? My battery holder will support a battery up to 310mm and I think the Seamates are 326mm or more?

How does your winch go with this battery?

Every one I have spoken to have recommeded that a winch should run off the cranking battery? (with the engine running of course).- Others may wish to comment here.
Other than running out the winch to inspect the cable and winding back in, I have not yet had the need to use in anger so I cant report.

Ok fair enough. I now have another one to throw in to the mix. Deka Seamate 8A27M, can get it through Battery World for $395. I will double check to make sure it fits but I think it might be the goer. It has 92 ah but only 580 cca, which is probably fine considering I want it as an aux battery not a cranking battery?

Problem here is you might overload the alternator and cause damage, still if your cars filling
with water I don't suppose that would be of great concern!

So your saying that the norm is to run the winch off the 2nd battery?

Personnel preference, I have mine connected to the aux as my rotronics isolator is designed to isolate the aux from the main and thus prevent overloading the vehicles electrics and causing possible damage whilst winching which would not be covered by the vehicle warranty. Still I do have it arranged so that should I be desperate I can bridge the main and the aux if required.

If winching, you should only winch for a short time anyway to avoid overheating the winch, while
waiting for it to cool down I can reconnect the aux for charging from the rotronics control panel.

                Cheers

I agree with you Leigh. Extensive, continual use of the winch is neither healthy for the electrical system, nor the winch. I have no intension in trying to burn out either the alternator, or the winch (slow and steady wins the race). I have made sure however, that since I am presently not running a dual batt system, that my battery is strong (Optima D27M 800CCA, 66ah). This battery should meet my current (pardon the pun) demands. IMO, the Optima has impressive cranking ability, combined with suitable (to my needs) deep cycle functionality.

As an update to this I have today purchased a Deka Seamate 8A27M AGM battery. It has 92ah and 580 cca. Will pop it in tonight and post a couple of pics on my build page I guess!

Any advice on a good ground point for the 2nd battery?

Run it back to the main battery earth point. That way you don't have to worry about stray current flowing through parts which were never intended to to carry current.

I'd be weary about grounding the 2nd battery to the chassis on the driver side as you never know if during charging some current will flow through the radiator and cause corrosion over time.

I've got it connected to the block via 2 gauge. I'll put some pictures up tomorrow for you guys to check.

Ok here are the photos of the install. I think the ground should be ok. Thoughts?
