  • 3rd Battery for Camper

Hi wondering if anyone has any idea about wiring up a 3rd battery in a camper trailer to be charged via Anderson plugs.
My question is, will the alternator in my prado cope with 3 batteries to charge or do i need to have some sort of switch /splitter to select 2nd or 3rd batt seperately?

I am NOT electronically minded but note my set up is:
Dual batteries under the bonnet using a Redarc isolator.
Battery in the camper trailer fed by a 50amp anderson plug from the main and using a Projecta isolator.
The system works and I am yet to have any problems.
If I was to pick any faults it would be to put some kick ass wiring size (eg 3 AB&S or whatever it is) through to the anderson and even consider a 100amp plug, but some would say this is overkill.
    Regards

A good option would be to use a DC/DC battery charger to charge the camper trailer battery as you may suffer some voltage drop and not be feeding in 13.5V or higher to give it a good charge.

Here is some info on the RedArc DC-DC charger. there are others. Havn't read this right through but there should be enough to give you an idea. You shouldn't need to put a splitter in:

I should add that my setup does the follwing:
1 first charges the main crank battery, then the second under bonnet and camper batteries. NOTE: I think they are both at the same time but not sure.
I can crank the car from either the second under bonnet battery OR the camper battery by using the overide swithches on boith devices.
I understand there are isolators out there that will deal with 3 batteries easily.

Are you able to link the two Prado batteries MLC, say perhaps for winching?

I don't think so under my current set up. On the winching point, I have only ever winched with the motor running and admit to being a little ignorant as to why a winch needs 2 batteries if this is the case.

Thanks for the info....I have been looking up DC-DC chargers and was a little surprised at the price!!! Seems i need to spend as much on the charger as i do the battery?!!
I have also found in my searches, an AC-DC-DC charger which appeals to me as it is able to charge from an AC or DC source... http://www.sidewinder.com.au/page213.html

Hi fluffychaos, you can have any number of batteries in any vehicle, the alternator will charge them all.

BUT, the ruling factors are, how big is your alternator, what voltage does it run at and how low do you intend to discharge your batteries.

The last one is usually unknown till you start using your set up.

Before you do anything, you need to know the operating voltage of your vehicle and the best way to do this is the next time you do a drive of 30 minutes or more, when you stop, leave your motor running and measure the voltage at your cranking battery.

This operating voltage is whats needed to give you an idea of what options will best suit your needs.

I don't see why you couldn't do this.... Just run it the same factoring out your current dual battery system... The alternator should cope fine with the 3rd battery as it will still only charge it once your main is topped up.
