  • Intermittent lack of power / throttle response

Hi, wondering if anyone has had similar symptoms or any advice for the following.

I have been having a few issues with my 120 1 KZTE Prado, namely with intermittent lack of power and throttle response.

It started about a month ago when the engine warning light came on and I could not reset it, and the vehicle lost most of its power ie could barely make it up the hill to the auto elec.

The auto spark diagnosed it as a faulty earth connection on the aftermarket cruise (auscar) fitted from new and no problems since I had it.

Not long after it was "fixed" I was driving out of town when the engine light came back on and the vehicle lost power shortly after I put the cruise on.

I pulled over and turned the engine off and then on again which reset the engine light and brought back power. I did not touch the cruise again for that trip and all seemed fine.

I took it back to the auto spark when I got back and he couldn't find anything.

I was then driving, funnily enough straight past the same auto spark one day when the engine lost some power and throttle response and appeared sluggish but not as bad as the first and second time, and no warning light. So I pulled straight into the auto elec. He disconnected the cruise and connected some fly wires to put the vehicle back to standard trim without the cruise connected to see if the problem persisted.

Well I think it is still there. Occaisonally I feel a lack of power and throttle response, not major but there. The lack of response appears most obvious straight off of idle when usually it is crisp and virtually instant, it sometimes now feels like there is some hesitation. The power doesn't quite seem to be there either. Another symptom that I think is there is that sometimes the engine seems to over run when I depress the clutch to change gear and I have taken my foot off the throttle.

I have had a roo systems chip installed for a few months now, I'm not sure if it has anything to do with this.

I have previously posted as well about a whirring noise coming from the fuel pump side of the motor, this is also intermittent and no one here in Adelaide has been able to pin point it although they agree that it sounds similar to a faulty solenoid or something. I am now wondering if this is linked with my current issue.

I am now wondering if it has something to do with the spill control valve or something like that in the fuel pump????

Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

    Cheers

I would take it back to std and start from scratch.

Pull the roo chip out, pull the injectors and have them checked and overhauled if needed.

Replace fuel and air filters, oil change and filter. Compression check.

Run a full two tanks (180 l) of fuel through it and work out the fuel usage. Make a note of any hesitations in a notebook while you do it. If its not running right then move onto the fuel injection system (pump etc). If all is fine add your roo chip back in, fill it up again and run the two tanks again and work out the fuel usage. If its running poorly then generally it will also be reflected in the fuel usage.

    good luck

Thanks Tassie Tiger, and I agree. I have disconnected the chip and will be changing all filters etc at my next service to see what happens. Although I have my doubts as the fuel filter has only done ~5000km.

Keep chucking ideas guys and girls! Cheers Cam

An update for those that may be interested in helping! I have had the vehicle in at Toyota and had several fault codes pulled from the ecu. These were associated with throttle position sensor and ABS system, which seems odd. Toyota's recommendation was to remove aftermarket cruise control completely from the system as well as the chip and see what these results were. Toyota couldn't replicate the problem. When I picked the vehicle up I noticed the issue straight away.

I have had the cruise removed completely, and still the issue remains. So I removed the chip, and still no difference.

I then had a bit of progress when I was test driving again I have realised that the issue is not actually intermittent. Rather it is present when the vehicle is in motion, ie the pedal is very doughy in response when I blip it while rolling with the clutch in, and as soon as the vehicle comes to a complete stop it is crisp again. Very strange but some progress at least! So to me this is pointing to some electrical sensor of some description that has association with the vehicle in motion as well as the throttle circuit. Back to Toyota tomorrow to show them how to road test properly!

If you have any ideas, even far out ones please send them on!

        Cheers, Cam

Hi mate I'm have just started having the same problem as you did, I have a 120 1kz with a after market auscruise cruse control. Car runs without any issue until I turn the cruise on, the led on the cruise turns red and about 5 seconds later the engine warning light comes on and with that engine power drops off (limp mode). Turn the car off and back on and the light goes off and the car runs as normal again. Just wanted to know if you found the cause of the problem? Thanks.

Intermittent lack of power / throttle response

            Cam,

I have experienced the same problem on my company's Hi-Lux.

When this happens, the ECU defaults back to what is called "Limp Home Mode". The timing is reduced to a fixed firing angle and fuel load. You also get no turbo boost. This limits your speed, on the flat to approx 40 to 50 km/h. And about 10 to 15 km/h up hills.

Mine was traced back to the Inlet Manifiold Air Management System.

It was very disconserting to lose power just after you had over-taken a truck.

I refused to drive the vehicle again after this happened.

Toyota believed that it was soleniod or a valve sticking on the inlet manifold.

It was sent to be fixed, but I refused to drive it after the repairs and forced the company to deliver my replacement vehicle a few weeks earlier than planned.

The Hi-lux was a 2005 model dual cab with 310,000 km on the clock.
