  • will exhaust upgrade make much difference to 1KZ-TE engine?

hey people ive got a 03 model prado with the 1KZ-TE engine. its done 262000kms and never misses a beat. i was wondering would an exhaust upgrade make much difference to the sluggish standard 96kw. i dont want to chip it as its got high mileage.

Hi, I have a 05 model - same vehicle as yours, I installed a taipan 3 inch exhaust and it made a big difference. The old dump pipe is very constrictive - about the size of a large egg. this is the main problem with the stock exhaust, The taipan and other systems come with a new larger dump pipe which maintains the diameter to the manifold.

The difference is the engine breathes a lot better, engine lagg is reduced and power is increased. Economy slightly better- about 1/2 liter less per 100k measured over long trips than previous.

Cost me about $1300 but was well worth it. Can be intalled DIY if you are mechanically minded.

I dont have a chip - may get one later on. I have had the exhaust for 6 months and dont regret it. slight extra grumble to exhaust and now you can hear the turbo spool up if you have the window open, sounds cool.

    Regards jay

      Simple answer is YES!

I have the full 3" Manta system with the extra muffler to keep it quiet.

Would pay to talk with the suppliers of exhausts as they may tell you to only go to Two and a half inch.Call taipan first and see what they recommend.

Had a 3" mild steel exhaust and digital EGT fitted before I towed my Tvan to the Cape. Significant improvement in power. More noise which is of course much more noticeable when towing the camper up a hill. Worth it though. Cost me $1100 fitted. Still cogitating about a chip as my motor has done 225000. Also considering bonnet scoop for intercooler to reduce EG temps.

Not wanting to hijack the thread, but those of you with 1KZ that have upgraded, anyone in Brisbane suggest a place to get it installed?

Check out Beaudesert or Roo Systems. Beaudesert insist that a 3" is too big for the 1KZ, Roo Systems say that if you have a chip and put a 3" on you just have to have it retuned and chip reset.

Who do we believe??? Anyone dealt with either? Others on here have the 3"installed and seem happy.

                    McB,
I had mine installed at the Beaudesert factory. Only took 2 hours to install and I could not be happier with the service or the product. I have posted on this topic before and it is my experience over all sorts of driving and towing a caravan that it gives me a 10% decrease in my fuel bill and noticeably better towing of caravan (less kick down to a lower gear when towing) and a noticeably quicker response of the engine from stationary. Beaudesert at the factory recommend the 2 3/4 inch only for my vehicle a 120 2003 diesel and the whole set up is just as quiet outside and in as the original with a much better note. Love em and would thoroughly recommend them.

Increase in power had been astronomical for me since going up to 3". The pickup through the revs is substantial, charges up to 3500 revs easily and I find myself changing gears because its over revving, rather than being out of breath!

My GTG fuel economy was 12.8 which is better than average for me given extra weight of the camping hear.

Have done 850 highway k's on my current tank so far, changed over to second tank at about 750 but have got the new roof rails on which are not as aerodynamic as before. Will post back when I fill it up after another couple of hundred highway k's over the next few days.

                            Gday guys.
Has anyone had a diesel chip/upgrade or heard anything about "Rapid Diesel"? They're supplied by MTQ engine systems Australia? Any info would be great. I'm considering the chip and possible exhaust upgrade. Getting mixed info especially on the exhaust side of things.
Been told get rid of the muffler and just have straight pipe??? (illegal?) Or a straight through muffler??? I'm sure you can all appreciate, we're spending big dollars on our trucks and want to get it right!

I did start with getting rid of the muffler. Made a little difference with power but was too noisy. I now have a beaudesert 2 3/4" exhaust (from dump pipe back) this includes a muffler that has an almost straight through pipe with no change in diameter (you can see through). I also have a DP chip. The chip alone made a huge difference and the new exhaust has also made a huge difference. You just don't have to use the pedal as much for the same result in power. It hasn't been on very long as yet but eceonomy does seem to be better so far.
