  • external phone aerial anyone using one

im looking for some feedback from anyone who has an external aerial for their mobile . im going back to telstra for its better coverage and looking at whether its worthwhile getting an external aerial for coverage in the outback or outside of a capital city on the east coast .

I have an external antenna on my phone (brand RFI), it is about 900mm long and mounted
on the bull bar, It does increase the range significantly. If you have a phone with an external
antenna jack I recommend one. If your phone doesn't have a jack I wouldn't
bother as I don't think the capacitively coupled types would give much improvement.

    Cheers

i've got a GME at6db, it seems to work well for my car phone. but i agree, unless your phone has an external antenna jack i probably wouldnt worry. the coupled ones are nothing special - slightly improved range but you can stand on top of your car and get the same reception.

I'll second LeighW's comments. I have a Blackberry cradle and while the antenna cable connects to the cradle via a socket halway along the power connection, it's not a direct phone connection and the improvement is marginal at best over the phone in the cradle on it's own.

        Cheers,

Just went away with a mate who has one and all weekend he was making phone calls when I never could and we were both with the same provider. For me it is not worth it as I am not in the high country and out of range enough. If you are having range issues and you have an appropriate phone cradle then go for it.

thanks for the feedback guys . i did a bit of googling and came to the same conclusion : ie unless it has an external antenna jack don't bother . im going away and will at times need to contact people for business . at the moment i have the opportunity to tell optus to shove their contract and go back to telstra ,so im looking at options for a new phone as well . thanks people

It is brilliant if you have a proper phone cradle. We have one and can make and receive calls in places others have no reception at all.

Bury cradles are fantasic our fleet spends most of the time off the main hwys and we used they with 6 types of phones and they always make a big difference - overall range is hard to improve but a Bury Cradle and quality antenna will make a huge difference in holding a call thru dips etc.

I assumed that your phone/carkit would have a connection for an external antenna. I used to have a Nokia 6310 with Nokia Carkit 91 and RFI glass mount antenna in my Prado 120. In fact, this (minus the phone) is still in a drawer somewhere.
This range of Nokia Nokia phones is still the best in my opinion and I believe they are still for sale (new) on ebay. Let me know if you are interested in the carkit/antenna.

So what are the options with all of the smartphones since they have no jack? Is it worth the capacitive cradle for more range?

Croozr...are the Bury cradles with your company used with smartphones? HTCs, Blacberrys and the like?

I use a Bury cradle with an external antenna on my Iphone 3. It is an inductive connection and not a "plug in", and I agree with the other comments .... no great range improvement, but a great cradle for charging and holding the Iphone.

I have used a Blackberry with a Bury cradle since they released a NEXTG BBerry just today completed a 690km trip thru the great southern WA with 4 guys 3 blackberrys and a Iphone 4 and we have been rotating the cradles and phones thru to enable us to keep up with messages and snyc Emails.

I don't sell the Bury's but i have see them work and help my team function! much easier than reverting to the Iridium and much cheaper!

PS we have just okayed HTC's but I have not done a trip to verify their performance

                            Matthew

Broomstik won't add heaps of range but it will hold the signal thru the holes and back of hills (WA size)

Just trialling a Radio Specialist (SA) NextG antenna on my temp vehicle while waiting on my new Prado to turn up! - Wire whip Ant and very stable with little noise and PL259 base = easy to detach
