  • Another Battery question/opinions........

My main crank battery is about to go spewing acid from 2 of the cells and making a general mess! I am interested in replacing with an Optima but still undecided between a Yellow Top or Blue Top. I was looking at the Blue D27M but is better suited as an aux and not the main? Is the yellow better to use as the main crank?

I have an AllRounder for my Aux but not going to replace it as yet....it has been a good battery.

I would go blue top purely for the dual terminals

The blue deep cycle appears pretty much the same as the yellow. As D4D said the blue would be better with the dual terminals.

But.. From what I understand talking to battery people the AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries, which these are, do not like too much heat so are not generally suited to engine bays.

the red tops are more suitable as a cranking battery and the yellow and blues as an aux.

My understanding of these Optima batteries is they have been designed to withstand heat better than other AGM betteries. Hence there price.

Optima are one of the few AGM batteries suitable for under bonnet installation. My cranking battery is an Optima Red Top. I would have preferred a Blue Top for the extra terminals but at the time the Blue Tops were only available with the main terminal posts offset to the front and the Prado wiring loom would not reach. The distributor said Optima were working on more terminal options which may now be available - something to check before making a final decision.

Thanks for the views guys. Still undecided but if simply going for ease of extra terminals the Blue top is the way which is one thing that attracted me to it to begin with.

My only concern is if there is any issue using it as the starting battery and recharge cycles. I am not concerned with the heat on these as they are made to work under hoods of some warm spaces.

I've got Yellow Top which I was told was fine as a cranking battery (even though its a deep cycle). Only issue was the negative termina lcable had to be lengthened as it wouldn't quite reach.

Hmmm....would be the same with the blue top. I'll hav eto be prepared for extending the cable.

This may be a silly question but how do you add onto such a heavy cable?

Would it be better to replace the cable than extend it?

I got mine from Battery World and they extended the cable. Took them about 5mins.
                        Here's how it was done:

They just made a short cable with a ring terminal at each end. One end connected to the original earth cable with a nut and bolt and the other went into the original hole in the front guard.

Might be a silly question but why didn't you just get the same battery with reversed terminal configuration?

                          Cheers

Pretty much ALL deep cycle batteries (at least the AGMs) have the terminals reverse to a Cranking battery. Just the way it is...

How much have people seen/paid for these Optimas. Saw this http://www.batteriesdirect.com.au/sh...r-special.html which looks like a fairly good price. I'm up for a new battery now also and am able to get the Century Yuasa NS70X battery at a real good price (Staff price for me through a contact) but if I can find a good deal on a Blue top (34M) then I'll squeeze the plastic out and pay the extra. The specs on the 34 yellow & Blue are identical except for as mentioned the extra posts on the Blue. I dont have a dual battery sys yet so this would be perfect for me in the interim.
Sorry to hijack LD2.... Thought it was relevant?
