  • Turbo Saviour

Hi there I think I have gone through all the threads associated to 150 Diesel Engines, but can't find anything mentioning these units. I am in the process of installing one of these units into my 150 Prado. I have used one once before on a Mitsubishi Canter 4WD Truck with success, this vehicle is still going strong 14yrs later.

    www.turbosaviour.com.au

I like the idea of the accumulator feeding oil into the turbo "for up to 5mins after the engine stops". Plus it also gives the added filtration of the oil going to the turbo.

The reason for fitting it to the Mit Canter engine was I had a complete Turbo Failure, after a rebuild of the Turbo due to leaking seals. Turbo rebuild was done by reputable company specializing in Turbo's. As a Caterpillar trained mechanic I have rebuilt Cat Turbo's, and am aware of needs for lubrication etc.

From my understanding modern diesels have an oil drip system on shut down so there is no need to fit such a device.

      Looks like a great idea.
How big is the unit? Can you pls post some pics up when you finish your install. Would be interested to see this as I am sinfully lazy when it comes to letting to turbo cool after driving.
Mind you I'm pretty relentless on the work utes d4d and that's done 50k and not showing any signs of slowing. Haha

Barry do you have any reference articles regarding your "understanding". I hate to waste time and money fitting this unit. I've had a look around the engine bay of my Prado and I can't see anything which would pass for an accumulator or even a header tank that is connectd to the turbo oil supply.

Not only does this give added filtration, but it is supposed to give oil to the turbo for lube and heat reduction for "up to 5 mins after engine stops" as the ad says. I remember checking my Canter several times & it had oil press for at least 4 mins after shut down.

What about warranty if this is fitted, could be a challenge should there be a failure. I note that guys getting second fuel filters fitted have had mixed response from dealers re warranty issues and nothing in writing.

Yes well I guess this is the problem we all face, if it is not a Genuine Accessory, or an approved accessory fitted by the dealer, I guess we just have to suck it & see. Your damned you do & damned if you don't.

              Hi Warren

Im also a diesel mechanic and know of the units you are talking about. We often ran similar setups on our cummins fitted trucks and other machinery.

The reason we did this is that operators shut them down from full power and it gives the turbo time to spool down from high revs whilst maintaining pressure. This is replicated in vehicles by using a turbo timer which seems far easier to fit/remove/hide from Toyota

Having said that, I dont have either on my 120 but just idle down when I arrive home.

If you do go ahead can you post some pics?

I've got an old Toyota Surf with the old 1KZ-t in it with near on 400K on the clock, the thing is 18 years old and not one problem with the turbo. I've considered fitting turbo timers and the like but I found that usually before I get to the end of a long drive I slow down a bit so as I'm not pushing the turbo as hard. Usually let it idle for a few minutes once I get there as well. The turbos in these things should be good for heaps of mileage as long as they're treated well. Treat it well and it shouldn't miss a beat for at least 15 years.

Hello, i have recently bought a 120 series with a 1KD (D4D) engine and was considering puting in a turbo timer (not a Saviour) just to let the turbo cool down after running it. I have one in my hilux surf with a 1KZ engine and i reckon its great, truck has done 330,000km and uses no oil and runs mint still. i was wondering if this is the turbo timer helping the engine and turbo last longer or just my regular servicing (i do service every 5K). i also dont drive my trucks very hard, and never really let the turbo spoll hard.

One of my mates that sells the turbo timers say they are a bit of a thing of the past and that they dont sell many any more. is this becuase people just cant be bothered with them or becuase they are a old wifes tale?

i just like knowing that i can turn the engine off esp when im in a rush and not have to worry about cooling down the turbo.

What are other peoples views of installing turbo timers? yay or nay?

from an agricultural perspective, I swear by turbo timers, they're fantastic, leaving the engine running for 5 mins to cool down after its been sitting at full boost without a break for the last 40 hours can't be a bad thing. The same applies for smaller periods of time, and smaller engines too, its what I believe anyway.

I say nay. "Parts left out cost nothing and cause no service worries"

Turbos have come a loooooong way in reliability.

I always slow down a bit before turning into the driveway then idle up the drive, reverse into the carport, stop, turn off the radio, grab the iphone, grab the wallet, grab the wife or girlfriend and then shut it down.

I agree with Tassie, from memory the manual warns you to let it cool down for 20sec if you have just driven up a steep hill or similar. Try and get my wife to let it cool down......no chance, but she's a feather foot anyway.
