  • Grande console fridge questions

Does the console fridge have it's own compressor, etc. (as opposed to running off the main a/c unit)?

If so, where are the bits located?

Following last weekends trip into Yalwal, there seems to be an intermittent 'screech' (not very loud, but definitely there - sounds a bit like the summer sound of the insects in the bush with the windows up) when the fridge is running (haven't noticed it since turning it off), and it doesn't seem to be there when the main a/c is running.

Just wondering if I may have got some dirt/mud/water into one of the fridge components........

I thought it just ran off the airconditioning unit.

i would assume it runs off the Normal AC compesser, The sticker on myn says that the air con can't be turned off if the fridge is running.

More often than not, including the last 3 days whilst camping, I run my fridge without the main a/c switched on. Fridge works perfectly fine (actually too fine sometimes when the drinks come out almost freezing).

On my 2006 the air con cannot be switched off when the fridge is running. You simply dial the fan speed down or temp up to "not use the climate control" if you dont want it on.

I'm With Piggy, If i want cold drinks but all the windows down/sunroof open, i cant turn the ac off, it just wont let me. '

are we talking about the standard center console cool-box that holds about 4 bottles or a waeco/engle
cause i don't think my center console cool-box runs when the car is off (just wondering about your 3 day camping)

Hmm, I can turn my A/C off while the fridge is running. And the fridge is running off the A/C and not a separate compressor.
Edit: To clarify, with the A/C off, the fridge fan is still running but no cold air-conditioned air comes out.

It runs off the A/C compressor, turn off the fridge and the clutch will release on the compressor, have a look see.

Well, I guess anyone using the cooler to transport donated organs will have to leave the aircon on and engine running.

check the fan inside the actual cooler box. you may need to grab a mirror and a bright torch to look and see if anything is caught in the fan area or maybe the fan isnt working correctly or at all (i know where you can go to get a bright torch HAHA)

Pretty sure you can pull the whole unit out if you want to. I know the cover (tissue box holder) behind comes off with no fuss.

                          The above replies are interesting.

Just to clarify, the console fridge wasn't running when the engine was off - it stops when the ignition is off.

But, it definitely cools (almost freezes) when the main aircon is off - that is how it was running all the time the engine was on during the camping, and how it is often run. And yes, we are talking about the standard console fridge, not a Waeco replacement or anything.

Will have to try the mirror, however I only had drink bottles and cans of drink in it - there has never been anything loose in it to have shifted and get caught in any 'internal' moving parts.

I'll also try running just the main aircon again to see if the noise re-appears.

I turned the cooler back on yesterday on the way home, and when the noise happened again I opened the cooler - it definitely got louder and does seem to be the fan inside the cooler. Will have to find a mirror and see if I can find anything, though it sounds more like the bearings on the fan, so may require dismantling.....

(Also checked the owners manual this morning - it clearly states that when the power button is pushed and the light is on the cooler is on and running efficiently, when pushed again and the light goes off the cooler is off. No mention of requiring the main aircon to be on, and no mention of it on the sticker under the cooler lid. Toyota must have changed the spec on it a few times if 2003 and 2006 models require the aircon to be on yet 2004 models do not.).
