  • Incorrect fuel readings

Hi Guys, have an 08 120 series D4D ,filled both tanks. After 400km the sub tank reads half, then switches to main tank IE the 90l lights up,anyone experienced this before?

  • #2
Switching to the second tank is normal when after fiilling the gauge reaches 1/2, but after 400klms? Should be more like 600-700klms.

400km to the tank - you'll get that when you drive with your left foot resting on the brake pedal!

                  A question.
When you filled up after the 400k trip when light came on how much did it take?
I had a look at my spreadsheet and these are some readings
                  Date kms Litres LPK
                  28-02-10 536 58 10.9
                  05-11-10 762 84 11.04
                  27-05-11 992 104 10.6
Since 7/07 I have travelled 47000k's (without van) and the average LPK is 10.7.

I always completely fillup to ensure accurate readings.

Hi everyone.Busy running a fuel consumption test to check if the gauge is working properly, though i think i could have had an air lock at the end of the day.

The results are finally in.After filling both tanks to capacity, mix of highway, town driving with a heavy right foot due to several hills and overtaking lanes,i have done 979km using 104.12L.Which works out to about 9.4km per L .Of interest was that the fuel gauge dropped to just under half before switching to the sub tank(90L LIGHT ON).The sub tank holds 87L ONLY.As anyone noticed the same readings from their gauge

I'm pretty much the same (have an 08 D4D). Depending on what I'm doing I get 900-1100k's on the first tank, the guage drops to below the horizontal before popping back up with the 90l light on. The second tank always seems to go much faster than the first, probably just an illusion. I'm averaghing 10.4l/100k atm.

                        Cheers,

                        Dave

The second tank syphons across to the first so if u filled the car as soon as the light comes on u would find that u would probably put approx. 100 litres in hence why the second tank always seems to go faster as it does.

I filled up the other day and the 90l light had not come on.
                            Mileage = 1017
                            Fuel to fill 96.6litres
                            LPK 9.49
                            MPG 29.74

Included a trip of 500kms at mainly 100 sometime 110, rest around town

I found that the forecourt at the local fuel station has a slope to it and I had a lot of trouble filling until I worked out to park with the filler on the high side and the vehicle nose down. When the bowser starts to click I give the vehicle a shake that moves the air lock of bubbles out of the tank and can then get more fuel in.
