  • Dust Relief Valve on 1kz Air Filter Housing

The dust relief valve on my air filter housing was clagged up with dust for so long (previous owners lack of detailed servicing) that it is out of shape and would likely let water in during a water crossing. So I bought a new one and tested it in a bucket of water however the "lips" of the valve didn't close over and a little water entered. Question is, should I be sealing the lips up with silicone prior to doing water crossings? (heading for the Cape) I have already sealed the small drain holes in the bottom of the filter housing
    Cheers.....Wayne

Same problem if snorkel fitted, as long as your vehicle is not standing in water for
a long time your proberly ok, on mine though I have a snorkel and have sealed the
drain and the other holes in the airbox with silicon to be sure to be sure!

Also if you fit a dual battery system you probably won't be able to access it without
removing the aux battery so it won't get checked anyway.

    Cheers

Did you have sunction on the valve, as would be present when the engine is running? This suction is what closes the valve.

as dereki mentioned, the valve sucks closed when the engine is running. Without the engine running the valves opens a little to assist in letting the collected garbage out.

Thanks guys. Forgot about the suction. I will install the new valve without interfering with it's design by adding silicone. And yes I will have to remove the auxillary battery but that is all part of trek prep anyway

One word of caution, yes if the motor is running it may seal, if you get stuck
in a crossing with the motor stopped then water may seep into the
            airbox.

            Cheers

LeighW you are correct if I stall it mid stream, however I reckon if I find myself in that position I will be removing the glow plugs and cranking it over to try and get the water out anyway (if the crocs don't get me first).
Wondering whether any other members have sealed the valve up like LeighW has? I can't think of any disadvantage in sealing it so long as I regularly remove the filter and clean inside the housing.

I know it's hard to get to, but if you are going to do a water crossing, just put a clothes peg on it!
Don't forget to take it off tho!!

Love the "keep it simple idea", however I would have to remove my auxillary battery to put the peg on.

Maybe a Paper BullDog Clip instead of the above peg? at least it is flat across its clamping surface.
Must get one to add to the gear in the console.
