  • How do you secure your driving lights?

I had a mate staying at our place over the long weekend while we were away in the Otways and on Saturday night someone managed to steal his driving lights.

He was parked with the bull bar 6" from a fence and they managed to unbolt the lights, cut the wires and get away without being disturbed. His son was sleeping in the room next to the car, less than 10' away so they must have known what they are doing.

My theory is they have spotted the vehicle and the lights at a local hockey carnival they were attending and followed them home and then did the job later that night.

Its not a flash 4x4 with lots of gear on it and you could not see the lights from the street at all, so its not someone walking or driving past that just happened to notice them.

So what method do you use to stop these low-lifes knocking lights off of the bull bar?

    Hi Chris,

That would p*ss me off to the max
You can get lock nuts for driving lights eg: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ANTI-THEFT-LO...-/310181500041 or if you really want to make sure just weld the nut on! Don't forget to align the lights properly first :P
Our 6 year old and 3 year old try their hardest to make sure there is no time or money for the other baby

just tag a little bit of weld on the end of the bolt so that you can undo it, and adjust them etc but not remove the nut from the bolt. if you ever do need to remove them you can just go at it with a grinder.

i had someone pull back my inner guard friday night in my driveway and with a shifter undo my UHF antenna from my bullbar and take the lot.. the car was parked in the driveway with a streetlight overhanging it.. pretty game.. cut the cable and now its an inch to short to attach a new antenna. Got to run a whole new length

you can use high strength loctite stud loc, or the last few threads on the driving light stud burr them over with a chisel, when you want to get the nut off get a dienut and run up the thread, or even drill a small hole through the stud and put a roll pin or split pin in to slow them down. cheers samo

Not having access to a welder, I bolted mine down with two different size nuts... and Locktite...
Along the same lines Samo, I though about putting a padlock in place of the split pin.

Padlock idea was the way I was thinking of going... small luggage padlock covered by some heat shrink so it doesn't rattle or wear...

Try to cover/seal as much of the padlock as you can. With ingress of water and dust/grit the lock will be stuffed after 6 months and you will have to cut it off if you ever need to remove the lights.

Heat shrink over the padlock, now there's another great PP idea...

Thats a bit rough Crowey, you should think about telling the cops about that. (would have inserted a smiley face if they worked for me)

I lived in the city once, got sick of people pinching stuff, moved back to the bush, no more problems!!!!

                    Cheers Andrew

                      Hey Crowey
I recall being told that connectors are available for joining two cables. So you may not need to rerun the cable. Check out some communications suppliers.
                      Cheers

That is correct. ARB cut and joined my cable under the bonnet when they resprayed my bar. Wasn't happy about it but they assured me it was fine and I haven't had any issues in 2 years.
They used a RG58 BNC connector on each cable end and connected them to a barrel connector then heatshrink over the lot.

Joiners if done properly are ok but keep in mind each joiner inserts a loss therefore
using a barrel joiner inserts two losses. To join coax better to get a male connector
for one end and a female connector for the other that way a barrel joiner isn't required.
Best also to get a tech to do it for you assuming you don't have the appropriate crimpers
as then you will be able to use a FME or SMA chrimp connectors, as they have a much lower
loss than the old PL259 types at UHF.

                          Cheers

like it! simple enough hey and would work providing the thief doesnt carry one as part of his "tool kit" wonder how much they are

what about silicone on the thread/nut? would that prevent them or slow them down? i believe there is a product to remove silicone should you need to get back at them but i was thinking if there was silicone on them you could slice off most then undo over the remainder, but would it slow people down?
