How many do you need to place the first order, or is there a cutoff time?

If I recall correctly 6 was the magic number. ie 3 front plates per sheet and 6 rear plates per sheet.

Again, no rush, just want them yesterday and I'm sure Team Piggy will cut some stickers at minimal cost for each plate.

FYI AMTS - I have found Ego couriers to have a great price and excellent service areas www.e-go.com.au . The absolute best price is for depot to depot, but you could always go from your door to a depot in the recipients are if those interstate are looking to save dollars. It usually is quite a bit cheaper.

Ian, I've been using smartsend, e-go and transdirect for delivery pricing. I've found that each comapny have unique delivery areas, prices and whether it's door-door or depot-depot or in between. The cheapest prices don't come from the same company for all delivery locations. So it looks like I will be using different courier companies dependent on postcode and do a bit of running around.

I'm going to submit the final drawings to the fabricator for them to cut me the steel prototype. This allows them to check their parameters and allows me to test that the 3D modelling is going to work.

I will not be taking any deposits until the prototype fits well and I am ready to place the order. I think that this is fair for all involved. The fabricator is trying to fit the prototype in on weekends, so hopefully, they won't take too long to get the prototype made. The cutoff date for ordering will be extended accordingly.

to confirm, would the bash plates be different depending whether drop kits are installed or not? I might not install one at this stage but might do so later hence the question?

amts
24-06-2011, 12:06 PM
You can add 10mm spacers to the 4 (out of 6) mounting points on the front bashplate should you wish to add a diff drop kit later on.
Otherwise, the V6 version will have a longer tophat (this is the mid-mounting points) and 10mm spacer fixed to the front mounting points. It is less fiddly this way than trying to add spacers later on.

EDIT: Both diesel and V6 versions are now compatible with a diff drop. I still need to know if you have a V6 or diesel as the rear plate is different.

pjorek
24-06-2011, 01:30 PM

I'm still "YES" for 1xD4d bashy with not spacers required at this stage unless already built in like V6

I've added estimated pricing to the first post. I'll need your postcode for delivery costs later on.

EDIT: Info above about tophat lengths is no longer valid. Diesel and V6 versions are now compatible with a diff drop.

I'd say about 1st or 2nd week of Aug.

Nick,
Sure, I could use a hand. However I normally do this stuff after the kids go to bed and I've done my bit cleaning up in the kitchen, which ends up being about 9.30pm 8-0. As you have a 1KZ, you could be the other prototype tester and I could excuse myself from the family at 7pm on Tuesday. I'll do mine on Monday first.

You could fashion the sliders and plates together into wings, be there in no time and still just overnight delivery rates :)

Step 1: Invert front plates to create aerodynamic top of wings
Step 2: use second plate as wing undersides
Step 3: lay out out sliders as wing frame.
Step 4: duct tape it all together. DO NOT duct tape to rig yet
Step 5: If GXL duct tape to existing sliders; or
If Grande, affix pivot and duct tape wing to pivot and pivot to existing sliders to allow for F1-11 swing wing effect.

All done.

Nick,
The prototype is lacking all welded parts, vent holes, nutserts and sump and diff cover plates. It was produced to check the fabricator's manufacturing processes and that my angle measurements are correct. You can take them for a test run to Birdsville, but...... don't say I didn't warn you.

Nick,
I'll be in touch on Monday

Cam,
The bashplates are level with the crossmember between the diff and the transmission. So the ground clearance is unchanged. The angled face is still well within the approach angle of the car. I will have to compare the steel prototype with the factory bashplates when I get it.

amts, working long hours and finding it difficult to check.

Is there anyone that can check the following for us:
"Can you double check for me on your car (120 diesel with trans cooler), as to whether you have the transmission cooler lines running near the bottom of the radiator? The reason is due to this post which shows brackets holding the trans cooler lines beiing attached to the cross member under the radiator. If you have this bracket, then you will need the V6 version of the bash plates.

So can you remove the front bash plates and double check that you don't have 2 brackets under the radiator cross member? Thanks

G'day AMTS,

I've sent you a PM, requesting another set for my 2008 D4D.

My Toyota stone-deflectors are now beyond 'sensible' repair, so I'm black-top bound until I get replacements. If you have an ETA, that will help with to deal with my black-top boredom :).

BTW, when I look at your drawings, there seems to be very little steel surrounding the front bolt holes. One of my bolt holes was retapped, so I now use a slightly larger-diameter bolt in that one hole. Do you see any concern if I need to widen one of the holes in your front plate?

Cheers,
LFaR.

Yes, I have rec'd your PM.

Just went round to pick it up. There's a small glitch in that there were 2 holes missing in the tranny plate. Will pick that up in the morning. The good news is that they made 2 sets.

KungFu Panda 2 is on at the drive-in, so I've been roped into that. I've got to do my family duties. The good news is that it finishes before 8pm so I'll get the front plate on tonight after the movies.

There is a small glitch with the fold angles. I will get the fabricator to adjust it when I go back and see him tomorrow.

Got the front plate back from the fabricator today and still needs a slight tweak to the fold angles. Going back tomorrow. The tranny plate was pretty much spot on apart from 2 holes which were slightly out - my measurement error.

Looks like you could trap a lot of muck/mud etc on the rear plate?

Hi Marc,
That thought did cross my mind a while back. I wasn't going to add any slots to the plates for several reasons:
1. Adding more holes will weaken the structure (not by much but still, it's better to have it as strong as possible)
2. More holes means more crap can get through the plates

I am supplying longish bolts and to assist in cleaning, the bashplates can be lowered by undoing the bolts, but not undoing them completely. A high pressure hose with an angled nozzle or one of these can remove the crap above the plates

Any chance to see the front on photo? Did you end up putting front ventilating holes as per the fist post's drawings?

amts
18-07-2011, 01:15 PM
The front on photos is on an earlier post http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?20937-AMTS-120-prado-Bash-plates.-SA-made-supplied.&p=293834&viewfull=1#post293834

There will not be any vent holes in the prototype. Only in the final production version.

I spent about half an hour driving to work with the bashplates on, travelling at 70-90km/h. Temp gauge did not move but it's only a short distance.

Just popped out of the office for some fresh air and looked at the rear plate. I can actually see the top of the plate from the front wheel and under the side steps. So no trouble hosing dirt off the top of the rear plate at all by putting your arm/hose between the tyre and the wheel arch. Will get a shot of this after work.

i wonder how the 10mm loss in clearance compares to the likes of TJM or BrownDavies

amts

I know that the TJM plate sits higher for the main part but then they weld a scalloped plate where the front diff is, bringing the clearance back down. I have no idea about the BD plates.

Nickchap and Switched popped over for the prototype fitout and there's good news and then there's bad news (MLC won't be happy).

The good news is that the front plate fits perfectly to both Prados.

The bad news is the rear plate is too short. For some unknown reason, the distance between the cross members at the tranny is further apart on the diesels than on the V6. I will need to double check a manual diesel (1KZ and D4D) to see if they too have the larger distance between the cross members.

It's a very simple design tweak to make the rear plate longer.

Here are photos of the bashplates attached to switched's rig with the ARB deluxe bar.

Yeomada,
What switched said. I forgot to take the photo of the bashplates on Nickchap's Prado as he had a Sovereign bar installed. But essentially, there is a big gap between the Sovereign bar and the radiator cross member. There is a DIY radiator bashplate thread somewhere.

Marc,
I'll be putting the order in next week. I've just got to check iantz's and voyager4x4's Prado regarding the longer plate required for the diesels. I expect to be placing the order in next week.

Here is a photo of the top of the rear plate through the tyre and wheel arch I promised a few posts up.

Tonight I installed my diff drop kit to make sure that the bashplates are going to clear the diff. Here are the photos of the kit and with the kit installed. Took under half an hour.

amts
22-07-2011, 12:18 AM
And here is the photo of the clearance of the bashplate to the diff. About a bee's whisker, or less than a mm.

I also measured the clearance of the bashplate and I got 250mm. This is with the suspension settings on normal height (Grande), 40mm lift at the front & rear and 265/70R17 Wrangler MTRs with 40psi in them. I then ran out of time to measure the factory bashplate.

I am now standardising the front plate so that it is common between the diesel, V6 and whether you wish to have a diff drop installed or not. The photo below with the <1mm clearance between the diff and the bashplate is the new standard plate. I am making cutouts to cater for the transmission cooler line brackets. This means that the ground clearance is the same for all Prado variants. The only variant now is the rear plate which needs to be longer for the diesels.

I met with the fabricators today with the latest round of drawings. He has suggested that another round of prototype (this time with all features included) be done before committing on a full order of ~30 sets. The reason for doing this is due to the changes I have introduced to improve the strength of the large bashplate, the standardisation of the front bashplate to suit all models and the extension of the rear plate for diesel models.

The fabricator will look at completing this final prototype work in 2 weeks.

For those who can't wait for the final product to roll off the line, please let me know so that I can take you off the list. I'm sorry that this has taken so long however, the fitment of the current prototype has thrown up some new ideas for improvement and I think that it is worthwhile for the improvements to be incorporated.

I will throw up the new CAD pictures on Monday when I'm back at work.

No, you're not missing anything. In the front area, the lowest point is around the cross member aft of the sump.
When I wrote about some loss of clearance a few posts up, I was referring to the fold point under the vent holes, which is where the diff mount is. However, with the Mk2, there is an extra fold and the clearance has gone up as shown above - 247mm vs 242mm. The Mk1 would have been lower at 227mm.

Soon, but not till I'm happy with the Mk2. Don't like to take people's money if I don't have to, but if you've won Lotto and it's burning a hole in your pocket, I'll come to your place right now!

Hey amts,

I know I'm a little past the cutoff date, is there any chance of being included on the list ? If no, I'd still like to put in an individual order. My factory bash plates have had it after just one trip through the Simpson, front and back !

What is the grade of steel you are using, I'd like to harden and temper mine as well once I get it.

Thanks mate !

Although I have not replied directly to your post, I have been updating the list in post #2. You are on the list but it is unlikely that the production version will be ready by September. Well at least not early September. I suggest you get something else if it is cutting too close to your trip. Do let me know if you wish to withdraw from the list.

Dont suppose there are any fabricators down your way who actually want the work is there?

September? What are they doing, x-raying each sheet for structural integrity?, engraving serial numbers on each item as a sign of authenticity? I was soo young when I made that first post that evolved into these plates. I fear I will be dead before the final product is ready.

I can see the news article now " amts makes 6 bashplates for the beloved antique Prado 120 series. Unfortunately only 3 of these vehicles are known to exist and one of those has a Brown Davis plate. In other news, Toyota has announced the arrival of the Prado 2700 series with optional plasma drive and long range tanks meaning you won't have to fill up until your reach Alpha Centuri.

Dont suppose there are any fabricators down your way who actually want the work is there?

When I first started this, I contacted quite a few fabricators. The ones I didn't choose had a combination of the following:
1. Didn't want to know about it/didn't respond
2. Was too small and didn't have the necessary tooling to make some of the bends
3. Was just as expensive as Brown Davis
4. Didn't have compatible software

The saying goes: cheap, good and fast - choose 2.

I'm trying my best to move things along at my end.

You could machine the plates from titanium! I saw some serious blocks of this stuff as part of my work. Damn expensive, no wonder the new strike fighters cost sooooo much money. Yes, they machine parts for the strike fighters, but hey, its Radelaide, half of the state is doing something related to defence....

I'm thinking 5-6 mm titanium plate, one piece from front to back. Cost roughly 15-20k (after waste recovery). sweet!

Then again, carbon fibre may be a cheaper option.

Yes MLC and the other half is constructing a 2.8 klm elevated roadway. Sure to be some Bitumen on this one to soak up some of our taxes.

Can I take it from the latest update that there is a slim chance the plates may be ready by cob 19 August?

Couple more...

The plates are almost perfect. It needs one bend to be angled more as it is currently interfering with the diff by 1-2mm.

Measurements taken on my car:
Front suspension height 772mm
265/70R17 Wrangler MTRs with 12mm tread
Diff mount 278mm
Diff 253mm
Cross member (aft of sump) 256
Bolt head protector 246

compared to voyager4x4 measurements:

Here are the clearance dimensions as measured on voyager4x4 with 760mm front. & 800mm rear. Running on 265/65R17 BFG ATs

Factory vs AMTS
Diff mount 247 vs 242
Diff 238 vs 228
cross member 228 vs 230 (aft of sump)

Send through an email posted above or at the beginning of this thread to confirm your order.

Question and apologies if I have overlooked in the thread but what is the purpose of the diff drop spacer?

A few guys are looking at dropping the front diff, so I had to get some spacers made to make sure that the plates will definitely work with a diff drop. I believe all other after market plates require extra spacers on the plates to accommodate a diff drop. So I thought I'd make mine different to the rest.

Is the Diesel version basically the same plate or what are the differences?
The front plate (i.e. diff/sump plate) is the same. So the rectangular cutouts for the auto transmission coller line bkts will be empty when the bashplates are fitted to the diesels. The rear plate (i.e. transmission plate) is different.

Actually looked at the pics amts posted and got wood!
I wonder what reaction you'll have when you finally come and pick them up?

John Holmes
Date of Birth 8 August 1944, Ashville, Ohio, USA
Date of Death 13 March 1988, Los Angeles, California, USA (AIDS-related illness)

Birth Name John Curtis Estes

Nickname
The King of Porn
The Sultan of Smut
Johnny Wadd
Wonderland
Long John Silver

Height 6' 2" (1.88 m)

Mini Biography
Born John Curtis Estes on August 8, 1944, in rural Pickaway County, Ohio, the youngest of four children, porn legend John Holmes was raised by a religious fanatic mother named Mary and an abusive alcoholic stepfather named Harold Bowman. He was a bible student, but at the age of 16 dropped out of school, left home and enlisted for a hitch US Army, where he was stationed in West Germany for three years. After his discharge he moved to Los Angeles in 1964 where he married a young nurse, and worked odd jobs such as taxi driver, door-to-door salesman, postal clerk, temp worker, coffee vat attendant, ambulance driver and forklift driver.

In the late 1960s he gravitated to the underground porno industry. One story was that a female neighbor was making porno loops and advised Holmes he could make good money. Unfortunately, his first check bounced and, after that, he always insisted on payment in cash. Another story is that in 1967 Holmes was frequenting a mens card playing club in the Los Angeles suburb of Gardena when a photographer for an underground magazine noticed his large "member" while standing next to him at a restroom urinal and gave Holmes his business card, telling him he could get plenty of work in still photo magazines. By 1969, with the advent of X-rated porn films, Holmes moved into the movie business. His tall, slim build, curly light brown hair, a light mustache and bright blue eyes made him an instantly recognizable star, John was not lacking for work, bringing not only a professional attitude but also his legendary endowment (12-5/8" long, according to a Screw Magazine interview, while other stories put it at 13-1/2" long). His enormously long penis got him starring roles in over 2,000 loops, stag films and adult features in a career that spanned nearly 20 years (with a peak of a $3,000-a-day salary). His lucrative off-screen penis-for-hire business took him around the world.
