  • Dual Battery Trays and power socket in boot

    Hey guys,

Have a bit of a two fold question here. Have tried having a look for the answer through the search function but couldn't find anything specific.

Now, I'm wondering how I go about installing a 12v plug in the boot of my 120 prado. I've seen that in the 150's it's standard and is mounted on the driver side on the back pillar (where the door hinge pillar is). I wanted to put it in the same place and make it look very 'natural'. Maybe even a dual port so I can plug fridge and maybe a light or other accessories. If anyone has got this set up please share your pics and what you did.

Other question is how exactly does a dual battery system work (I know newbie question). I would want to use the main one for STD driving and the secondary one to run accessories. Then in the event the main battery dies or goes flat that I can flick a switch and start the engine via secondary battery. They'd both need to be charged at the same time while traveling.

I know very basic question but I'm new at this.

Also is the secondary battery install pretty technical or can I do it myself following instructions?

Anyone got an idea of the cost of a kit and tray?

    Thanks in advance,

    Loz

When the search fails, which it may due to the recent forum upgrade, try a good old fashioned manual search. Go to the forum page, then 120 series electrical, then scan through the titles of the threads, page after page if nescessary. Doing this you would have found the answers to your questions in less time then it took you to post your question!

This is one of the techniques I have learned due to being to dumb to use the search function properly, it takes me less than 5 minutes to scan through all the topics in the 120 series electrical section.

Put aside a couple of hours to read through all the information and you will be fully educated on the subject by the time you finish.

    Cheers Andrew

I admit. Laziness may have kicked in there! I'll do a more thorough search and see what I can find. If someone wants to put in their 2 bobs regardless it would be awesome!

        Hi Loz,

Where abouts in Melbourne are you?
If you are near the Eastern Suburbs, suggest you talk to Piranha Off Road in Bayswater.
They are open late on Thursday Nights - until 9pm for memory, so you can visit them to discuss you needs.

They will sit down and work out what your requirments are, what your future plans are, and if you have a Off Road Camper / Caravan, so they can custom tailor a solution for your needs, and even give you a written quote as a guide.

I have spent several nights with them sorting out my requirements and I have found them to be very helpful and they will be doing my work, when I get the Funds for the Install costs.

I will be installing the following:

ARB Compressor - Under the Bonnet
2nd Battery (Already Bought the Bits (Tray,Battery, Isolator - Redarc)
        Inverter (300W/600W)
        Merritt Sockets
Twin / Double 240V Surface Mounted Sockets

If you need a Battery, please PM First as I may be able to get one for you, depending on which Type (Lead Acid, Gel or AGM) at a Better Price.

why cant there be a simple info box come up as soon as you click search (if indeed it gets clicked, sometimes i have my doubts) and the info box says something along the lines of: if your search fails to find what you are looking for, please use google or bing or similar and use the keyword: "pradopoint" in your search

surely that fixes everything until the search function is fixed unless your lazy

sorry thats my 2 bobs worth

To answer the question the 2007 D4D GXL has a 12v socket in the rear already... Although it is fed from the accessory circuit and thus not energised when the car is switched off. Secondly, the factory wiring is considered to be under rated for the load requirements of larger fridges.

The option is to run new cables through the firewall and down along under the door trims, remove the rear drivers side lower panel and disconnect the factory supply to the socket and connect your new supply instead.

This will give you adequate supply and a factory look.

As for trays and batteries, there are many options and a manual search will be your best bet. You could also try a troll through the rig build up section and pm a member with that has a similar setup to what you require for more info as required.

            Good luck, and happy reading.

                Hi,

If it it the same as the 2008 model GXL, it should be located just behind the 2nd row seats on the Pillar Drivers side, approx half way down.
Its a Cigarette Type Socket, with a flap over it.

That would be useful but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to happen. The good old manual search I described above is a great technique though, you stumble across other things completely unrelated to what you were looking for, after reading these threads you often realize that you "NEED" to make more upgrades to your prado!

                      Cheers Andrew
